How easy is it....
    #3023154 - 08/19/04 01:45 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

to install a internal drive into an enclosure? I want to have an external hard drive, but the internal ones are much cheaper. I know next to nothing about the insides of my pc or anything, so Im hoping it's easy.

Thanks in advance.

Slide drive into enclouse. Line up screw holes with the slots.
Insert screws.

Plug in appropriate master/slave ide cable.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I meant I was gonna buy an external drive enclosure, and install the internal drive into it.

I have no idea.
One could assume that the basics would be the same....i'm thinking the external enclosure is just a drive bay with an anti-magnetic cover.

Open up the external enclosure, set drive jumper correctly, put drive in enclosure, fasten drive into enclosure, plug cables into drive, close enclosure, done.

Ok, this may be a stupid question, but what is a drive jumper?

the master/slave decider pins.

You put a lil connector over them to close the circuit to tell the drive what it is.

Only stupid if you already know the answer.

A jumper is a mechanical switch used to change the way a hardware device behaves.  If you look at the end of your hard drive where all the connectors plug in, there will be a row of pins that looks like  . ::::::.  If you place a jumper over the pins, it makes an electrical connection and looks like .::::8:::  (where the 8 is the jumper).  The sticker on the drive will tell you where to place the jumper to properly set the drive to master, slave, or cable select.  For an enclosure, you probably want cable select... if that doesn't work, then try master.

Lemme google and see if I can find some actual pictures... my ascii art isn't that great.

Look at the pictures here: http://www.harddriveupgrade.com/jumper_pins.shtml

yeah, it's easy. if you were to buy the enclosure retail, there will be instructions. just pop it in, plug it in via firewire/usb, and format the drive if it hasnt already been.
