Dark Star Orchestra
    #3022410 - 08/19/04 09:43 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

OK- so I told you guys I'd let you know what I thought of DSO. That was Fucking F-U-N! With a capital F! 2 capital F's, in Fact!!!!!!!

I had a great time and danced my ass off.  For some reason, it was just really easy to let go and have a great time....they played a show from 67- really bouncy and light and extra jazzy....they did it in the style that the Dead would've done then.  It was great. What a wonderful thing they are doing with their lives, they really seem to love it.  I hope they write their own music too, on the side- cuz they are excellent musicians.

I didn't try to pretend they were the Dead or anything, I just really enjoyed it though.  Seeing the real Dead is always beautiful and lovely but always twinged with sadness since Jerry has been gone.  Hearing Wharf Rat, as always, brought tears to my eyes, but this time it was more from a pure loveliness of the song than mostly from missing Jerry.  The more I see the Dead and now Dead-like-stuff live, the more I am able to work through my sadness and let go of him a little more, and just wish him peace and happiness wherever he is.....

I LOVE DSO. The first time I saw them they did a Jerry Band show, and it blew my mind. They are incredible!

Cool!  I have heard mixed reviews of them, but I went with the least amount of judgement possible and had a really wonderful time.

There is always mixed reviews. Some people need to compare. Like some people forget that The Dead isnt the Gratful Dead. And compare the two as if they were. Same goes for DSO people try and compare it to the Greatful Dead. But there is no Gratful Dead anymore its history.

Glad you had a great time! Was the venue on the smaller side?

Yeah, it was in a bar, a 2nd story one, with a huge patio outside with big open doors- to dance on when it got too hot indoors.  I have to go drop my son off at rock climbing camp, be back later.  Great to see you bro!

DSO will be in Des Moines next week. I've seen them a few times and enjoyed myself, but I am not sure if I will go see them this time around. I need to start saving some money! All these shows are hard on the wallet.

Yeah...I spent way too much money last night. The sierra nevadas were $5 each!!! Luckily, the doormen were cool and I snuck a bunch of beers in in my coat after the first set. Still I spent waaaaaay too much for a cover band. But hey, I am still in a very good mood from it, so it was worth it.

Oh jeez it was great. I tought kids about nature. I would take them on walks show em the different ecosystems. I realy tought them a lot about mycology. I would bring in fruiting blocks of various fungi.

I would also take the kids into the woods, blindfold them and make em walk down a path holding onto a rope. This would teach them to use there other senses. Then I would talk about blind people and how they use there other senses toget by. I would also talk about animals and how they use there senses.

My favorite activity was taking the kids and teaching them outdoor survival. The camp new it was my favorite so I did it 4 times a day an hour and a half per class. I would make up this senerio for the children before we go into the woods. Then we would pretend to get lost. Then we would go threw the how to's of what to do if lost in the woods. I let them build lean to's for half the class. So I got to sit there while they were all busy and make a fire. Then I would make a pt of natural tea for them out of sue mack, lemon balm, pine needles, spice bush, and an actual bag of tea or two.

Wow, I bet those kids loved you so much! They were very lucky to have such a great instructor.  I want to do some teaching at my kids' schools about mycology.  I'm thinking of purchasing some edible kits because I don't know the first thing about growing edibles.  Maybe I can find some in Telluride this weekend!
