HELP with cobweb casing please!!! Safe to keep? Eat?
    #3020026 - 08/18/04 07:25 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Greetings shroomerites. Upon returning from a weekend away, a grower realized that 3 LARGE (2'x1') straw casings he had recently birthed had cobweb contams. He removed them from the terranium, but decided to keep them to see if they would pin/ fruit. Well today, 3 days later, they all are pinning. The one with the worst contam problem has by far the most pins, the second some pins, and the healthiest (least contaminated) one has very few pins.
Could someone with more knowlege / expreience please answer the following:
1. What are the odds that these pins will develop into full sized fruits?
2. What is the toxicity cobweb mold?
--Will the shrooms, should they continue to grow, be edible?
3. Is it worth risking contaminating all other casings still in the house to fruit the 3 contaminated casings?

All advice/input is GREATLY appreciated!!

IME cobweb often precedes a case of the meanie greenies
good luck though
try misting with an h2o2 solution
and cutting off the cobweb
some peeps i know have defeated it

I beat cobewb using neat peroxide and painting it on the effected areas with a tiny paint brush. see this old thread for details.

An update:
I think surgery/completely removing the cobweb is about impossible by now. The casings have been misted daily with 0.5% h2o2 solution since Monday, but the cobweb doesn't stop. Despite this, things look promising:
Casing #1 is about 85-90% covered in cobweb, but has well over 100 pins.
Casing #2 is about 75% cobweb, and is just starting to pin
Casing #3 is about 66% cobweb, and has 150+ tiny pins!
This is the first time the grower has fruited contaminated casings, and he is astonished by the results so far.
Should things continue to go this well, he will be sure to take pics and forward them to me so you all can see the shrooms and cobweb partying together!
