Poor Cy! It IS hard to explain Second Life, isn't it? Don't worry, reinforcements are here! <grin>

Okay, first, pretend you never heard of video games. There, that was easy, wasn't it? Just let go of all that negative imagery and relax.

Now, remember how cool Etch-A-Sketch and Light Bright were when you were a kid? Or that Spin Art paint thingy? It's kind of like that.

And remember how amazing it was when the Internet was just getting born, and there was all this great garage content from people whose interests and visions were suddenly out there to be shared with everyone? Remember how exciting it was before the "dot-coms"? It's also kinda like that.

You CAN do anything. (This is what I do: www.vertuous.org ) And so can everyone else. So it takes some wading through, and there is a lot of crap, but there is also some really amazing art, some incredible groups of people coming together in a new way, and some serious funkiness.

Think Burning Man on your computer. Think Vegas on acid. But forget video games. It isn't that at all.

I just came over from Second Life to say hello!

I think Second Life (SL) is like the real world without all the limiting physical constraints such as the need to eat, seek shelter, work, obey the laws of physics, and so on. Since SL is comprised of thousands of real people just like you, it is a very human place. So much so, I'm working on organizing a democratic socialist movement to keep the capitalists in check (http://www.ulrikasheim.org/sdf). Naturally, the Anarchists are trying to prevent me from organizing to stop a government from forming. Sounds interesting doesn't it?! I'm just 1 of 15,000 players, each with their own story.

I don't spend that much time in SL... an average of five hours a week, maybe? I think the whole myth that these things are somehow life-stealing traps is way out of whack. I spend more time watching TV, and what the hell good did that ever do anyone? <grin>

And, hey, we've raised almost 4k REAL money for charities in just the last four months - so I don't feel bad about those five or so hours at all! Pretty damn well spent, if you ask me!

I also come from Second Life, after spending years on games like Ultima Online I feel I've finally found a home online   I remember the leveling up, being restricted by what some programer's idea of what could be done. Days getting levels, killing monsters and players. I always had in the back of my mind, why cant these 'games' be more like the old MUSH's where one could add content, use their own mind, create? I ver happy to say I've found it in Second Life..... its where the only limitations one has is their own imagination   There are some weeks Im inworld a lot, say 20-30 hours. But, there are times when Im not inworld for more than 5-10 hours a week. I like the release I get from SL, being able to create anything my imagination can think of
Expensive? It can be, I spend a lot a month on it but not nearly as much as I spend on other entertainment. You can spend as little or as much as you wish. It's not limited

Ace Cassidy here... I'm another Second Lifer, so can offer another perspective on things. And hey... I was munchin' shrooms back before a lot of you were even out of diapers, so I share many points of view with the bulk of the Shroomery.

First off... Second Life ain't no game. Toss any experiences you may have had with Everquest, or Asheron's Call, or any of those other MMORG's out the window. There is NO comparison. SL and these "games" are completely different beasts.

In SL, you don't have to spend your time slaying monsters and acquiring weapons, although you can if that's your cup of tea.

What is presented to you, in the SL-world is a universe of 3D-streaming content that has been almost completely been built by the residents of SL. I spend a bunch of my time creating some of that content.

Like I said, I'm a bit of the "old hippie" type, so the content that I've created tends to reflect that.

With Second Life, you can upload "sounds", and you can use a scripting language that is provided, and I used these features to make "drums" that play a whole bunch of rhythems I created, giving us nightly drum circles.

I also created "Tokin' Joints", which are little digital-joints that can be "smoked" and passed around.

So with some of the things I built, there's now a place in Second Life where the kewl folks can hang out, bang on some drums, and smoke a little weed every night as we watch the digital sun dip below the digital horizon (and Second Life has some spectacular sunsets).

I also have a work-in-progress project I call "Acid Chair" that takes someone on a rather psychedlic journey of sight and sound when they "sit" in my chair.

Second Life is quite kewl, my friends... there are a lot of very cretive and bright minds creating a lot of very interesting things to see and do.

And don't get frightened by talk of some of the big $$$ that people are spending. Second Life can be a very enjoyable experience for a one-time cost of $9.95.

- Ace

WOW! thanks everyone! some really excellent descriptions.. does a good lob of fleshing out what i was trying to say.

Dear Shroomery peoples,
i hope you don't find it offensive that some SLers came over to talk about this. i didn't expect such a reaction.. but this is what i was talking about. the community is very passionate about SL and get excited when we get a chance to tell others about the unique experience of SL.

i also hope a couple of these SLers stick around.. this place is great! The Shroomery has instantly become a new favorite hang out of mine. it seems to be a rather civil and nice community as well.. maybe there's a seamy underbelly i haven't seen, but so far.. so good!

I am very politically active in both worlds. I find Second Life is a place where I can take my message and present it in a more radical fashion without the repercussions one would face in real life. It's a great way to practice for real life politics.

Maybe I'm wrong but i think what Puz meant by saying "MMRPGS or whatever>pointless pixel games." is that SL would be good. Because SL could be called an MMRPG or whatever where as a pointless pixel game would be Doom 3.

d33p, now i'm not sure. i thought he was saying that it doesn't matter what it is, they're all pointless.

PuZuZu, can you help us out here? SL = good or bad? thanks.

By the way ">" usually means "is greater than" so i thought he was saying those games are better.
