Karo tek. Uhh...WTF?
    #3018264 - 08/18/04 12:28 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

So a bud of mine used some fully colonized rye jars as the source for the mycellial culture for a Karo tek. He G2G'd some jars, and also made up three Karo jars with a few rye berries that were covered in myc for each jar.
So, today, about 1 week on, the water is no longer clear. It's sort of like a bit of paper was left inside and has disintegrated into very tiny pieces.
Early on, the jars were essentially clear. Now it's getting cloudy. Ya think my BFF is doing okay?
The rye berries were dipped in a 35% h2o2 65% water solution with sterile tweezers in a sterile glovebox environment, then transferred to the jars immediately after the peroxide dip.
Does myc in liquid tend to form a single white "clump" or does it propagate through the jar/liquid in small pieces.
Sorry, no camera right now. I'll try to get some pics on later this week.
Many thanks!

GB

I've only ever done Karo (successfully) once, and mine looked how you're describing.. kinda cloudy, with many little white specks floating about in it.  Never saw any large 'clumps' of myc in mine, so it sounds like your buddy's are normal to me.

I've seen both one clump and small pieces.  It probably just depends on where the spores germinate....like one ball of karo or karo that is mixed up perhaps.

just test it on one jar wait two or three days if you see healthy growth use it on a whole batch
that sounds fine as long as its not too milky and is not dark colored

in answer to your question IME karo doesn't start to form big clumps until after the myc is well developed...
until then small pieces are normal
so i would say you are fine

Thanks all.  I just checked them again and the little white specks are getting bigger.  There was some concern this was all just the rye berries disintegrating, but it doesn't look like it.
No, it's looking like a little winter karo wonderland right now.  I'm getting excited, praying for no funky colors.
How does one knowwhen/what stage of development of the myc to put it in the 'fridge?  And what temp should it be kept at?  Anything over freezing?
Again, thanks for your help!
