Any drummers in here?
    #3019786 - 08/18/04 08:23 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I have a kit but haven't had lessons. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get started untill I can get lessons? Any good things online I can check out? Is there any sort of technique type things I should be doing and what not. Also , any good songs you know with some easy drums I could figure out or something? Thanks.

My first drumset was a Pearl Forum Series, it came with an instructional video that gave the basics and introduced a few simple beats to start out with, then I just taught myself from there. I'd suggest doing the same if you're not getting lessons right away.

I havent watched that video in a while. I should dust it off and pop it in the old vcr. I have an Export series kit. 6 piece.

I've played drums since I was 8.

the first thing you need to do is learn the fundamentals. You need to learn how to properly hold a drum stick, then you need to learn the basics of music. If you don't know how to read music, then learn. It's not that hard. best thing to do is just drills, you can find a book of drills at any music store.

a few I know off the top of my head:

paradiddle: it's where you alternate hands: RLRR LRLL
flam: it's a double-stroke, but you use two sticks

uh can't think of anything else at the time

double paradiddle, same as what he just posted, only you let the stick hit twice in one thrust. See how fast you can get it controled.

Making 'boucing' hits with sticks that's controled sounds really good.

Check out some Buddy Rich vidios. You won't be able to get to his level easily, but watching other great drummers is a plus because you start to pick up things like osmosis.

Rudiments like the other fellows said. Just get comfortable playing your snare first. Don't worry about technical exercises too much as far as playing a kit is concerned. You'd be amazed how much cool shit you can play just using alternating single strokes on different parts of the kit. You can lay down a suprisingly complex sounding beat just playing L R L R L R L R, so long as you use dynamics (ie: playing different hits at different volumes) and be thoughtful about what you hit when. You can also spice up a lot of stuff just by using unbalanced sticking, like RRLRRLR. Like if you've ever listened to Neil Peart's playing with Rush, one of the things that stands out is how he plays the ride. But all he's really doing is using unbalanced sticking between the ride and snare, like if he's playing snare with his left and ride with his right, it might be:
R,RRL,R,,RRLRR,R,RRL,R,,RRLRR Of course, that doesn't precisely indicate placement and length of the rests, but maybe you get the idea.

Oh yeah, the biggest thing........PLAY......A LOT!
Practice, practice, practice. Then practice some more, play, practice a bit, play, jam, groove, practice, practice, practice...you get the idea. It's like anything.
Once you get comfortable you can try playing along to music you like. Pick bands who's drumming you know will challenge you to a degree but not discourage you. Have fun!

well yes you can hold it wrong, actually if you hold it wrong and play enough you can devolope some nasty cases of tendinitis (sp) so i would research on how to do that.
