the best, hands down, to me, is Tool "Aenima"...any other tool album is a close second, especially Lateralus.
Also, any ambient electronic.

Ok, here's the obvious ones that I can think of. These are not all of my favorites, but most people will enjoy these artists while tripping. If you are tripping with a group, it is best to stick with artists that please the masses. Otherwise you will be changing the music a lot... which igets annoying during a trip. I'll post some funkier, lesser known stuff later. Radiohead: I especially like their albums from OK Computer to present. Pink Floyd: Anything Floyd is good in my book. Get 'em all. Pick a favorite. Floyd knows how to guide a good trip. Phish: Some people love 'em, some hate 'em... but there is no denying Phish's effectiveness while tripping. Very rhythmic band. Flaming Lips: Less known than Phish but the Lips have been around forever. I especially like Zaireeka! It is a 4 cd album... meant to be played on 4 cd players simultaneously! It makes a great trip activity! What if you don't have 4 cd players? Any combination will make for a unique Zaireeka experience. Don't worry if the disks aren't perfectly synced. It'll still do its thing. Beatles: Anything from 1965-66 on... need I say more? They're the fucking Beatles! Once they started making trip-rock, they did it as well as anyone... and... they're the fucking Beatles! Grateful Dead: Uh... I hear they're good for trips... uh... what was I saying? Jimmi Hendrix: OMFG... this guy tripped a lot. Bjork: She rocks, while still managing to sound a bit like a yodeling cat who was hit by a bus. Great stuff... especially if you like Radiohead. Dave Matthew's Band: Like most jam bands, Dave's Band is disliked by some and enjoyed by many. Their live shows are quite nice. I like Live at Red Rocks a lot. Live in Central Park's cool too. Crash is my favorite studio album. Zeppelin: The best jam band ever. Listen to 'em live once you're tired of the studio stuff. The Orb: Electric gurus of triptronica. Peter Gabriel: He does it... I don't know if he meant to... but he does it. Great progressive trip albums... especially his later stuff. Sigur Ros: Worth getting, even if you have no clue who they are. Radiohead loves 'em! Google 'em to learn more about this band from Iceland. Portishead: Cool atmospheric stuff... like Sigur Ros or Radiohead's later stuff... but different. Portishead has a female singer. Beth's awesome. Beck: He's the man. Especially Odelay and Midnight Vultures... Sea Changes is nice and mellow. Classical Music: Pick a favorite symphony... or take a wild guess. Religious music, or chants: For spiritual trips, helps focus your mind. Nature Sounds: Best music on earth.

Paul Oakenfold's Tranceport Album. The music feels like an eagle soaring in your mind. Everything is so clean and happy it just makes for an excellent trip. The Chemical Brothers dig your own hole and exit planet dust are very psychedelic. The Stone Roses with the album of the same name is really melodic and relaxing.

Whatever music you already like is the best, some people suggested infected mushroom to me and it fucked up my trip so badly, its a load of shit, in my eyes. I could make music like that SO easily, trance music and all that is just too easy. I like Tupac, Eminem, and Nirvana

I wouldnt waste my time, i make hip hop beats and help out some rock bands record, i love all music but trance/techno really isnt my cup of tea, made for pill heads as far as im concerned.
If you got music talent trance/house/techno is piss easy, you just have to know how to make progressive layered beats.

I can't even imagine listening to rap while tripping. While I don't know much about rap, and really don't care to, I know that a lot of trance/psy trance artists use psychedelics. Shpongle's main man, Simon Posford, is heavily influenced by psilocybin and DMT. And its no coincidence that a majority of the people who post recommended music while tripping, mention Shpongle. I think Infected Mushroom is right up there, they are nowhere near basic sound manipulators. I highly suggest you give them, Hallucinogen and Prometheus another try, while not tripping. These artists are the most farther away from "easy" music that there is.

I'll post some favorites of mine that nobody mentioned before:
- The Doors: Riders on the storm - Ravi Shankar: Morning love - Le peuple de l'herbe: mr nice - Rachmaninov: flight of the bumblebee - Bob Marley: African herbsman - Janis Joplin: Try - Canned heat: Goin' up the country
And my absolute favorite: the video of Jimi Hendrix @ Woodstock ! If you thought he was good while you were sober, wait until you see him while tripping: he's AMAZING; and somehow; you're able to follow every note and give a meaning to each of his song.
[ That having said; I haven't tripped once without looking at Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas; Don't know how I end up watching it each time; but it's great; and has some good music too! ]

It just depends on your taste, if you think rap is all about guys dissing women and talking about drugs and gus, youd be half right, but those are issues in todays world theyre not on some fairytale shit. I love all music, and rap is definatly one of the most expresive forms of music. They use all types of production and lyrical content can cover such a wide variety within one song.
But there aint nuthin like listenin to a guitar solo while tripping!!!!

The only thing with rap music it doesn't take as much talent than othe music. They do have to be able to write the songs (poetry), not play an instrument or even be able to sing. To each their own...

You're a fuckin tool if you think electronic music is for pillheads, dude. You claimed you could make Infected Mushroom-type music "so easily." Make a 5 minutes track and post it. I DARE you. By the way which Infected album did you hear? You are full of shit when you say you can make this kind of music "so easily." Make a 5 minute track dude and you'll realize how talented these guys are. Listen to their Shakawkaw track or some of their newer stuff - their entire "relax" cd from Converting Vegetarians is very different from their trance. "rap..use all types of production and lyrical content can cover such a wide variety within one song." rofl dude listen to some Shpongle if you think rap is so wide-ranged.. You've got it backwards - the talented electronic artists could recreate any rap song "SO EASILY," not vice versa. Prove me wrong, I dare you - make a Shpongle-like song or an Infected Mushroom-type song. oh yeah and Cervantes I recommend: Shpongle - Tales of the Inexpressible is definitely their more "accessible" album Pink Floyd Incubus Beethoven Tool Joe Santriani - a few tracks by Joe in a trip can always be pretty nice Eminem Younger Brother Tchaikovsky Miles Davis Hallucinogen
-------------------- Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me. In addition: SHPONGLE

It depends on how talented the person is, a rapper could be just as talented as a singer, just in HIS field, you lot can hate but rap is here to stay and will always be one of the most popular artforms, whether you like it or not. Thats the whole point of rap, no matter what you do or say we're still gonna do it. I admit alot of rappers are all image and gimmicks but not all of them. Theres no question that rappers like tupac shakur and eminem arnt just as talented or relevant to music as elvis presley. I see what you mean about talent but if your REALLY talented with words its just easily comparable with an instrument or a singer. I write, produce, play guitar, piano, flute, oboe, so i do have some idea on what im saying here.

Are you a member of the group or something? I didnt mean any offense dude. And sorry im not gonna watse time making music i wouldnt wanna listen to again, i wont knock it at all, all im saying is in the u.k. the majority of people who listen to trance/techno etc....are pill heads. Seriously. Im not saying all of them im saying most of them. I downloaded a few infected mushroom songs/live sets and im sure their fanbase loves them and they put alot of energy and creativity into their music but personally i cant take the fast tempo stuff it just isnt my preference, if im at a rave no problem, but trying to chill in my room it kinda has me on edge! I do like the mixing you can do with fast tempo stuff, i just find it easier to make then slow tempo or rock stuff, im not talking outof my ass seriously, i have my own studio and i help out friends who like to make ALL sorts of music, rock, house, trance, rap........And personally i LOVE rap to death but some people dont get it, i DO get trance/techno/house it just isnt my preference, if i made that music as MY music i wouldnt feel fullfilled with myself creativly. No offense meant. From MY point of view, dance music is basically easy to make because its based on fast tempo rhythms that are progressional and is mostly electronical sounds and effects, rap is based on a skelton track, basic beats, then vocal recording then additional production around the vocals to master the track, kinda easy but hard to actually make a GOOD song. Rock is extremely hard. period. Im talking guitars, drums and vocals to make a good rock song is fucking SO HARD to master! I get more of a buzz doing live dj sets of trance then i do any other music, but thats only because i find it piss easy to mix and you can concentrate on the crowd more. I can tell your an eclectic guy so im not being ignorant towards you, i love all music as im sure you do too.

Ah... the great rap/electronic debate. Silly... Is rap good during trips? Yes... especially if you like rap. The rhythms are very trance inducing although it can become hard to focus on the lyrics. As for rap being easy to make, I assure you, the vast majority of it is much harder than it sounds. Anyway, I think rock and electronic music are better during trips than most rap for one simple reason: Rock and electronic albums tend to be progressive. This means one song will set up the next song allowing the whole album to tell a musical story. There is a lot more progressive rock and electronic music than there is progressive rap. One very nice progressive rap album is The Beastie Boys: Hello Nasty. Outkast's Love Movement is pretty progressive as well... so is The Fugees: The Score. DJ's and MC's can be very annoying to some people during a trip. Be sensitive to others in your group if you are picking music that they do not enjoy. Find something eveyone likes... and leave it on.

The answer is simple. Boards of Canada is some of the best trip/drug music ever. Surprised it wasn't mentioned earlier. IM me and I'll hook it up with some monster tracks.

Rap isn't very good to trip to just because the melodies aren't as solid and vibrant as some of the melodies electronica can make. i don't know it just seems that rap doesn't have any magic to it either.
As for rock, it sounds good but I didn't get lost in the music too much. It sounds more like its playing at me instead of with me. Hard to explain I guess.
Rap and rock are the best to get drunk and high too though.

Melody does not induce trance like rhythm does. Listen to some bells from Bali while sober... after 15 minutes... you'll see what I mean.

I agree but theres nothing like an awesome melody hitting its peak and just going off. You just hold your head like its about to explode and say "ooohh SHITT!!!"

Tim Leary made some cooky tripping albums. Leary is a fun guide.
Phillip Glass and Terry Riley are Great.
Miles Davis and John Coltraine
Medeski Martin and Wood are amazing.
Yes, Aphex Twin is fantastic as well.

heh no I'm not a member of Infected Mushroom lol - I actually enjoy Simon Posford's (Shpongle, Hallucinogen, Younger Brother, DSP, Walter Ego...) work much more than Infected Mushroom - it is much less repetitive and he uses more layers in his sonic entertainment than any artist I have ever come across. Chronic all I ask is that you check out some Shpongle songs - listen to it expecting to learn something and I am sure you will.. You being a music producer I am quite certain you will be very impressed with at least the QUALITY of the production, if not the complexity and composition. Tracks of interest: Room 23c, A New Way to Say Hooray, ...and the day turned to night, Shpongle Falls, Around the World in a Tea Daze Do you have any hip-hop/rap tracks with particularly impressive production quality to suggest to me? I'd love to be fascinated by some rap songs I have not discovered yet. Don't worry; if its really cool I'll buy the albums, as I always do. Anyways.... peace

Might I suggest Volume 3 of the Ultra-Lounge collection which is called Space-capades. It is 60's era tunes like those you might find in technology or health film reels of the time. Lots of string plucking and such. There is not a sad note to be heard throughout the whole albumn and I often rely on it to pull me up from whatever depths I feel I might be entering, it never fails me.

One rap album thats good listening is dr dre's the chronic 2001, i love the instrumental version of that album, i usually load up loads of instrumentals when im tripping and if something turns me off i just skip the track, i got over 11,000 tunes on my computer so lots of variety! I cant really recommend stuff off the top of my head but ill definatly check out that stuff you listed

I am very familiar with Chronic 2001 (fuckin cool!) but was not aware that there was an "instrumental" version out there. I will see if I can track it down - thanks for the tip.... let me know if you come up with some other recommendations and let me know what you think of Shpongle

Yeah i actually prefer the instrumental version, you can download them pretty easy, soon as my nets back up ill check em out.
I also like eminems underground stuff before he blew up, i like his new shit too but his old stuff has a certain feel to it.
Mostly i listen to loads of hip hop instrumentals.
Tempations by 2pac, that instrumental always sends my head into another world. I like modern tracks that sample oldies, because you get that modern but still classic feel to it.

If you are after Hiphop for tripping to then your gonna have to look a lot harder than doctor dre, eminem, tupac etc, Their music is just too bland and sterile, for tripping you need something more abstract. A few of my personal favorites for the occasion:
Dr. Octoagon - Dr. Octagynacologist Canibal Ox - The Cold Vein Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus MF Doom - Operation Doomsday Non Phixion - The Future is now Jedi Mind Tricks- The Psyco-social, chemical, biological & electro-magnetic manipulation of human consciousness
On more of an instrumental tip: RJD2 - Deadringer Fingathing - Superhero music / The big red nebula band The Herbaliser - Something wicked this way comes Nightmares on Wax - Car boot Soul / Smokers Delight
If I would suggest any one tune to download check for : Taskforce - Butterfly Concerto Its all about nature, has a medevil kind of melody to it and is so weird that its a thousand miles away from the steretypical image of what "rap" is and what can be done with it.

while we're all recommending rap... everybody check out eyedea & abilities..
first born is a bad-ass trippy album (though i like him more when not tripping, eyedea's lyrics are really psychadelically inspired).. and also 'the many faces of oliver hart' is a great album.
as far as other tripping music goes, i too concur with shpongle. i turned on 'tales of..' on my last trip, and as dorset perception got about 30 seconds into it, i proclaimed "this man has mushrooms down to a T!"

definitely Pink Floyd by far. love to listen to all there music when shrooming. also great music to play on guitar when shrooming, very challenging, but once you can play it is very fun. Floyd music for me helps shape amazing visuals during the experience. try watching wizard of oz and listening to darkside, it has to be synchronized though. i would recommend listening to darkside, wish you were here, and meddle. thanks

Converting Vegetarians by Infected Mushroom is an awesome album. Its not like traditional I.M. but with actual beats/breaks. Dont get me wrong, psy trance is cool but those dance beats get boring (boom.boom.boom.boom..fcuk that). Check it out, also any Florida Breakbeat is sweet (dj Icey...Dj Baby anne)!!!!!

Agree with a lot of the picks so far, especially Floyd and Radiohead. But my absolute favourite music to trip to is a criminally underrated artist named Lewis Taylor . His music is best described as psychedelic soul, but he brings in influences as diverse as Marvin Gaye, Yes, Beach Boys and Todd Rundgren. His self-titled debut on Island Records is my second favourite album in the world, right behind Dark Side Of The Moon. He writes, produces, plays multiple instruments, sings and layers background vocals on his releases. With each new album he puts out, his guitar playing and voice improve, so it's always a toss-up of which is his better instrument. His best songwriting features twisting, labyrinthine melodies, dense wall of sound production that builds from a whisper to a scream, and enigmatic, personal lyrics that along with the melodies, evoke emotions effortlessly in the listener. You can check out some of the b-sides and bonus tracks here: Lewis III is like Beach Boys on acid, and usually the highlight of my trip Waves more Beach Boys on acid Trip So Heavy the name says it all A Little Bit Tasty a whisper to a scream Pie In Electric Sky/If I Lay Down With You and back again I Dream The Better Dream nice, mellow Asleep When You Come spooky sounding at the beginning, but builds nicely You Got Me Thinking straight ahead funk Cherry Blossom a gorgeous ballad, first dance at my wedding Cover of Jimi's Electric Ladyland Cover of Jeff Buckley's Everybody Here Wants You His new CD, Lost just came out in the UK. It's a lot more rock-oriented, but it's still soulful! It made Uncut's best new albums of 2004 list, and is available from www.slowreality.com or at Fopp in the UK. If you consider yourself openminded musically, track down his self-titled debut, you absolutely won't regret it!
-------------------- "We dont deliberately try and make everything come out like that [space oriented]. It just works out that things happen that way. We all read science fiction and groove to '2001'; its all very good. But some of our things happen completely accidentally." -David Gilmour, Pink Floyd

Not mentioned yet:
Meshuggah Download (side project of some of the skinny puppy guys) Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros have some stuff that sounds great on the way back down to earth. Tenacious D is great for comedy Opeth's Damnation King Crimson

Another album with some good tripping music is the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, especially the 2 instros, Let's Go Away For A While and Pet Sounds. They've both got crazy bass, the track Pet Sounds almost sounds like dub, and they've got that wonderful Brian Wilson wall of sound...

Also, check out Todd Rundgren! I smoked a doob and listened to his 1972 album Something/Anything, and it was like this:

trance/techno is way better than hip hop because without words(usually) trance can make me get goosebumps and make me emotional. hip hop.....ahhh not so much. hip hops good for when at the strip club. i cant relate to hip hop/rock/etc. because their lyrics dont compute. they dont mean what they say or say what they mean. Im trance and pschedelic rock all the way, because i dont want to roll on dubs. thers no time for that cuz " all we have is now. all we've ever had is now."

Procol Harem's 1st album - check out the lyrics on She Wandered Through the Garden Fence. Cat Stevens - Foreinger Suite, Sitting, 18th Avenue especially Janis Joplin - her version of summertime will melt you Joni Mitchell - okay a bit cheesey but very mellow Death Cab for Cutie: Transatlanticism (okay 50% of the album is utter wank but the other half is divine) Beach Boys - God Only Knows (only track I like of their's though) Hendrix (of course) Grateful Dead (naturally) The Moody Blues - Search for the Lost Chord (altogether "Timothy Leary's Dead") David Bowie - "Funny how secrets travel...." Bob Dylan - Tangled Up in Blue!!! The Doors - one of the best bands ever The Rolling Stones - early stuff naturally Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here, DSOTM, The Wall (for a masochistic trip)
Never got the whole listening to The Beatles while tripping thing - they always sound too nasally, dreary and miserablist. Prefer The Rutles (heh heh) - Shangri-La in particular. The Beatles wrote technically good music but it has always seemed to lack balls to me - The Rolling Stones were a much better band - they played like they all had a pair.

I like to listen to Ravi Shankar, it really sets the mood. But, Orb is really cool too and mellow. Seneca is pretty cool too but, sometimes their music freaks me out.

Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun Dream Theater - Awake, Scenes From a Memory Liquid Tension Experiment (side project of Dream Theater) - II Anything Zappa Radiohead - OK Computer Led Zeppelin - almost anything, but I really like IV Hendirx - fuck, just buy a greatest hits album...it's all trippy. Mogwai - they're the American equivalent to Sigur Ros...look up their albums on Allmusic.com Miles Davis - Kind of Blue...nothing like a screaming trumpet to take your peak to another world. Blue Oyster Cult - the song "Burnin' For You" really works for me Cat Stevens Chemical Brothers - really trippy electronic tunes Aphex Twin - anything but the song "Come to Daddy," that song's really fucking scary. Steve Vai - I would suggest buying Alive in an Ultra World or Alien Love Secrets to get you started. This guy speaks volumes of flawless poetry with his guitar...the most extraordinary and otherworldly instrumentals I've ever heard. He's a personal savior of mine... Planet X - If you're into progressive metal, I highly reccommend these guys. Fucking amazing sober; mind-blowing when shrooming. Porcupine Tree - In Absentia. This album is a great example of beautiful, beautiful music. Opeth - Damnation. Ranges from sad, soft acoustic to emotionally-charged death metal within the boundaries of one song. These guys are awesome.
This is really long...I could go on for hours, but I think you get the idea. Sorry, I guess I'm kind of a music geek .

Ogdens Nut Gone Flake by Small Faces - the side with Stanley Unwin narrating the story of Happiness Stan and his search for the missing half of the moon - classic 60's psychedlia, check it out, it is funny, rocking, scary - all in the same track at the same time - brilliant.
Agree with an earlier post re: Jimi at Woodstock - Villanova Junction and Jam back at the House are amazing - Montery is good too, plus you have the Who also..
Aphex twin is good - check out Girl/Boy song/E.P - classical music from the future - breathtaking, don't know how he makes those rythims work but they do!
Oh, and of course Syd Barrett and Early Floyd - I find later Floyd a bit too clingy and claustrophobic when tripping, a bit too..well. like walking through treacle!!

Here's the answer so far. Please add your favorite trip music to this list. It keeps getting longer and better. Or add reviews to EXISTING bands listed within this answer.
What is some good tripping music?
Wow... There is a lot of good tripping music. No, GREAT tripping music!!
The best way to listen while you trip is through good headphones with a quality source. The music generates the psychedelic images in your mind. Listen in pitch darkness. You'll be simply astounded!
This is a VERY subjective question, but here are a few suggestions:
* Addison Groove Project
* Air - "Moon Safari", "Talkie Walkie", "The Virgin Suicides" etc. Amazing French electronica duo.
* Allman Brothers - Live at Filmore East. You haven't experienced guitars until you've heard this baby when tripping.
* Aphex Twin
* The Apples in Stereo
* Banco de Gaia
* Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
* Beastie Boys - The in Sound From Way Out
* The Beatles - "Abbey Road", "Yellow Submarine", "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", "Magical Mystery Tour" etc. What needs to be said? They're the f*****g Beatles!! Once they started writing psychedelic music, they did it as well, if not better than anyone else has ever done. Turn off Your mind relax and float downstream...
* Beck - "Mutations", "Odelay", "Midnight Vultures" etc. Beck is THE link between the folk and beatnik past and the hip-hop present. With the fun, funky, sometimes mellow tunes, disdain for genre conventions, with free-flowing, sometimes absurd and ironic lyrics, and the melding of samples with played instruments fun times are guaranteed. Beck is the man!
* Beethoven
* Bela Fleck & the Flecktones - Ten From Little Worlds
* Biosphere
* Bj?rk - "Debut", "Post", "Homogenic", "Vespertine" etc. It is impossible to ignore any emotional response to Bj?rk's music. Her voice, lyrics and philosophy fused with the very best of production and orchestration create a life enhancing music.
* Blonde Redhead - Misery is a Butterfly
* Bluetech
* Boards of Canada - "Geogaddi", "Music Has the Right to Children" etc. Scottish IDM (intelligent dance music) full of enigmas and conspiracies - subliminal messages, symbology, and religion, scattered and reversed vocal samples, mathematical timing of beat structures, song titles, colours, cover art, and track lengths... Their sound has frequently been described as curiously nostalgic and it recalls the warm, scratchy, artificial sounds of 1970s television.
* Bob Marley: African Herbsman
* Brahms - Ein Deutsches Requiem
* Brian Eno - "Another Green World", "Music for Airports", "The Drop" etc. Brian Eno is one of those artists that you can have playing in the background for hours while you're working on something else, and not be distracted. But he's also one of those artists that if you sit down and listen to very closely, you'll almost certainly fall into a state of hypnosis.
* B-Tribe - "Spiritual Spiritual", "Fiesta Fatal" etc. Dramatic Flamenco guitar, ambient synthesizer tonalities, and moody, wordless vocals. Very chilled. It's music as mood and mood as music.
* Canned heat:
* Celtic Cross - "Hicksville". A very nice chilled psychedelic ambience collaboration between Youth, Simon Posford and Soul James.
* Chemical Brothers
* Cinematic Orchestra
* Classical Music. Pick a favorite symphony or take a wild guess if You don't have one. You won't be disappointed.
* cLOUDDEAD - "cLOUDDEAD", "Ten" etc. Three artists, ignoring the rules and doing what comes naturally without care to style or sales. An avant hiphop coalition whose schizophrenic compositions, uninhibited vocal stylings, ambient soundscapes, and polished live show have both impressed and baffled. A mushroom cloud of hip hop psychedelia.
* Coldcut
* Dave Matthew's Band: Like most jam bands, Dave's Band is disliked by some and enjoyed by many. Their live shows are quite nice. I like Live at Red Rocks a lot. Live in Central Park's cool too. Crash is my favorite studio album.
* The Doors:
* Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes From a Memory
* De-Phazz - Sort of like Zero7, less structured
* Einst?rzende Neubauten - "Silence is Sexy" etc. Crazy Germans...
* Entheogenic - "Entheogenic" and "Spontaneus Illumination". A blend of ambient atmospheres, chill out tunes, intelligent electronic dub, surprising ethnic trance, deep organic drums n' bass, and mixtures of delightful aural environments. Very entheogenic indeed. Their soundlab is currently situated in a 17th century building surrounded by deep forests in southern France.
* Flaming Lips: Less known than Phish but the Lips have been around forever.
* Forest for the Trees - "Forest for the Trees" (!), "The Sound of Wet Paint". A tripped out Carl Stephenson's (Beck's musical comrade) home studio masterpiece extraordinaire. The making of the first Forest for the Trees album mentally exhausted Carl so much, that he was finally committed to an asylum by family and friends. Luckily he's O.k. now
* Future Sound of London
* Grateful Dead
* Hallucinogen - "Twisted", "The Lone Deranger", "In Dub". The very best psychedelic (Goa) trance brought to You by the genre defining 'hallucinogenius' Simon Posford. All the trance fans - hold Your hats!!! The album "In Dub" contains Hallucinogen tunes remixed to dub by Ott.
* Hotel Costes
* Hexstatic
* Infected Mushroom
* Janis Joplin:
* Jazz Mandolin Project
* Jefferson Airplane
* Jimi Hendrix: OMFG... this guy tripped a lot.
* Joe Santriani
* John Coltraine
* Karl Denson's Tiny Universe
* King Crimson
* Kruder & Dorfmeister - The K&D Sessions
* Led Zeppelin: The best jam band ever. Listen to 'em live once you're tired of the studio stuff.
* Lewis Taylor - Lewis Taylor (1996)/The Lost Album (2004) The most criminally underrated musician alive. His self-titled album is a modern psychedelic soul masterpiece, while Lost is an amazing journey through 70's rock and shades of Todd Rundgren, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac with throwbacks to 60s bands like CSNY, Love and The Beach Boys.
* Leo Kottke
* Mahavishnu Orchestra
* The Mars Volta - De-loused in the Comatorium
* Medeski Martin and Wood (MM&W)
* Miles Davis
* Modest Mouse
* Mr Bungle - California
* Mr. Scruff
* M?m - "Yesterday Was Dramatic ? Today Is OK", "Finally We Are No One", "Summer Make Good" etc. Another Icelandic band making music as pretty and epic as Sigur R?s. Very pretty. For example album "Summer Make Good" was written in an isolated Icelandic lighthouse and recorded in a weather-station.
* My Computer - Vulnerabilia
* The Mystery of the Yeti - Parts 1 & 2. A collaboration between The Infinity Project, Hallucinogen, Total Eclipse, Process and Doof. Soundtrack of a ritual journey to a sacred meeting place high in Himalayas to meet the mysterious Yeti. Very trippy extraterrestrial ambience.
* Nature Sounds: Best music on earth.
* Nightmares on Wax
* Nine Inch Nails
* Nurse With Wound - "Sugar Fish Drink" etc.
* The Orb: Electric gurus of triptronica.
* Ott - "Blumenkraft". Another jewel from Twisted Records.
* Ozric Tentacles
* Particle
* Paul Oakenfold's Tranceport Album
* Peter Gabriel: He does it... I don't know if he meant to... but he does it. Great progressive trip albums... especially his later stuff.
* Philip Glass
* Phish: Some people love 'em, some hate 'em... but there is no denying Phish's effectiveness while tripping. Very rhythmic band.
* Pink Floyd: Anything Floyd is good in my book. Get 'em all. Pick a favorite. Floyd knows how to guide a good trip. Piper at the Gates, Ummagumma, Meddle (Echoes from this album is prob my fave tripping song), Dark Side of the Moon, Animals, Wish You Were Here, The Wall.. their Live at Pompeii dvd is bad ass too
* Portishead: Cool atmospheric stuff... like Sigur Ros or Radiohead's later stuff... but different. Portishead has a female singer. Beth's awesome.
* Radiohead: I especially like their albums from OK Computer to present.
* Ravi Shankar: Morning love
* Religious music, or chants: For spiritual trips, helps focus your mind.
* RJD2? - Dead Ringer, Since We Last Spoke
* RUSH - Moving Pictures - (Tripmeister says) RUSH is the most awesome 3 man band ever! A lot of people dislike Getty Lee's voice, but you'll find that it sounds quite soothing when tripping balls. Alex Lifeson's emotional style on lead guitar cannot be matched and Neal Pert's expert talent on his massive drum kit is incomparable. If you haven't experienced RUSH when shrooming, you haven't lived.
* Squarepusher - Ultravisitor
* Shpongle - "Are You Shpongled?", "Tales of the Inexpressible" and "Nothing Lasts". A magic carpet ride around the world in a tea daze! Shpongle is one of the most fascinating psychedelic sound performances and is highly recommended for mind bending experiences. They have taken unique and timeless music influences and blended them with the digital mastery of sonic manipulation to bring about a perfect blending of the organic with technology. A good sound system is strongly recommended to fully experience the incredible multi-layered sound effects.
* Shulman - "Soundscapes and Modern Tales" and "In Search of a Meaningful Moment". Shpongle wannabes or not, this is some very good stuff!
* Sidsel Endresen & Bugge Wesseltoft - "Nightsong", "Duplex Ride" (!), "Out Here. In There." Astonishing musical empathy between one of the worlds best contemporary jazz singers (Sidsel) and a keyboard and percussions wizard (Bugge). Their intimate intensity will blow Your breath away. Pure magic! Their solo projects (Bugge Wesseltoft's New Conception of Jazz etc.) are worth checking out as well.
* Sigur R?s - "Von", "?g?tis Byrjun", "()". The music of Sigur R?s sounds like it's constructed from the stuff of dreams. A fairy-tale explosion of unhinged elemental majesty.
* Simian - "Watch it Glow", "Chemistry Is What We Are" (!), "We Are Your Friends". Psychedelic pop experimentalists with a heavy emphasis on 'mental'.
* Spacetime Continuum (get Alien Dreamtime with Terence McKenna)
* Sound Tribe Sector 9
* Stereolab - "Peng!", "Dots and Loops", "Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements", "Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night", "Emperor Tomato Ketchup", "Margerine Eclipse" etc. Stereolab are combining an inclination for melodic 60's pop with an art rock aesthetic borrowed from Krautrock bands like Faust and Neu! Essential bright and trippy "feel-good" stuff with a Martini party inspired attitude.
* String Cheese Incident
* Takagi Masakatsu - "Pia" etc. Very enjoyable Japanese sound experimantalist.
* Terry Riley
* Thievery Corp
* Dr. Timothy Leary - "The Psychedelic Experience", "Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out", "Beyond Life" etc. The PR person of the brain speaks to You directly. Leary is probably the best trip guide there is. Tremendous, monumental, awesome!!!
* Tool - Lateralus, Aenima
* Twin Peaks Soundtrack
* UNKLE - Psyence Fiction
* The Who
* Trans-Siberian Orchestra (kick-ass electronic holiday music)
* Wevie Stonder - "Stoat", "Drawing On Other People's Heads", "The Age Old Age of Old Age", "Kenyan Harry EP" etc. First - it's not a guy, it's a band (Itchy Genius, Henry Music and M.C. Hat) that plays a compendium of styles including cack, advanced music and dog interviews. Wevie Stonder combine electronic music, live instruments and unpredictable narrative.
* Widespread Panic
* Wiliam Orbit
* Wu Tang - Liquid Swords
* YES!!!... Yes is Amazing! Simply GREAT music, tripping or not.
* Zero7
-------------------- Fiddlesticks.

Somebody, for the love of god and humanity, add Autechre to that list. It's the most psychedelic music i know, next to shpongle. I could write pages about all their music, i'd love to write a paragraph about them, for the list.

Can't believe no one recommended Disco Volante by Mr Bungle. Blows California in my opinion (much more insane and out there - will have you dancing around laughing like a crazed maniac in no time). Other bands I like to trip to:
The Mars Volta. Frances the Mute is a GREAT trip album, and so is Deloused.
Pink Floyd (of course)
The Doors. The 4 CD box set they released has a 17 minute live version of The End - absolutely mind blowing.
Isis. Oceanic and Panopticon are great epic yet delves into drawn out heaviness. Great stuff if you're into more metal orientated trip music.
Muse - Absolution is a killer album. Their other albums are equally good, but haven't tried them on trips yet.
Fantomas. Their 3rd album is 1 song, over an hour long. Pretty creepy, but if you're someone like me, it'll have you screaming for more. Director's Cut is a more upbeat album which has their interpretations of horror movie scores.
A Perfect Circle. Never tripped to these guys, but Thirteenth Step would be quite a good choice. Much pretty Tool though! As good as Aenima and Lateralus are, make sure you check Salival. It's quite limited, but you'll be able to find it on a p2p somewhere. Also, check out their bootlegged show in Oklahoma City in 2002. A mindblowing show, with an extended version of Schism and also Third Eye complete with the Leary intro AND the Bill Hicks sample.
Shalabi Effect. Can't believe no one recommended this! Their self titled album is 2 CDs, and over 2 hours of pure psychedelic. Same vein of music as Godspeed (but not the same type of tunes), and has an eastern feel to it. Lots of different instruments and a few complete freak out songs - one in particular is a 2 part song - Aural Florida (The Approach) and then Aural Florida. The Approach is a harsh feedback, ambient mess that eventually ceases and breaks out into an eastern acoustic spaced out number as Aural Florida kicks in. Worth checking out if you like to be tested on trips.
Coil. Best era for tripping would be post Loves Secret Domain album. Moon's Milk, Musick to Play in the Dark Vol 1 and 2, Astral Disaster are good trip albums. Their earlier stuff is dark, goth and industrial (especially Transparent... that album is actually scary). Also, albums like Constant Shallowless Leads to Evil is probably wise to avoid (unless you dig that kind of torment). Time Machines is an ambient album, with 4 tracks of drones and each track is a certain drug to facilitate time travel. Apparently tested and tried before the album was recorded. I hope to try that album on a strong trip one day and see what happens.
Earthtone 9. Old school metalcore from the UK (now broken up, but members have started various bands, like Twin Zero and the Blueprint). Pretty damn heavy, but Off Kilter Enhancement and arc'tan'gent have quite in depthed lyrics and a few "mellow" songs on there. Good way to pry open your third eye with a crowbar.
Nile. Eygtian style death metal. In Their Darkened Shrines is a hell of a ride (haven't tripped to yet, but under the influence of pot is a surreal experience) and has some almost psychedelic (dark though) moments. Mostly brutal metal, but if you can handle tripping to that kind of stuff, I can imagine it would be very rewarding (spare me your comments on how tripping to metal is WRONG. some of us like different things).
Mithras. Another death metal band, but one with ambient pysch moments. Their second album - Worlds Beyond the Veil begins with a 5 minute ambient track, shifting to different styles and then kicking off into death metal. Lyrics are a bit more indepth than your typical death metal band, and there are tracks that blend between the two styles of death metal and ambience. Very strange listening to this album.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Fav album is their second one (f#something...can never exactly remember the title), and Raise Your Skinny Fists has one of the best build ups first track on any album I've heard.
Led Zeppelin. No explanation needed. Fav album, III. Mainly for the acoustic flavour and songs like That's The Way and Tangerine.
Shpongle (funny that, I'm listening to it right now). Prefer the first album for it's darker and more insane ride. On a good stereo with decent bass, Are You Shpongled? will have your mind very well and truly blown.
Devin Townsend. Canadian prog metal - very cool shit. Devin Townsend has some of the most insane (bar Mr Bungle) lyrics that really make no sense. Good lyrics for tripping. Some of the best epic prog songs I've heard. Terria is my fav album and have tripped to that while lying in a field many times. Always a pleaser.
Tomahawk. Another Mike Patton band. Less insane than Fantomas or Mr Bungle, but equally weird. Especially Mit Gas.
Deftones - White Pony. Say what you will, but this album has given me some of my most inspiring trip moments.
Lord of the Rings soundtracks. Fav is probably Fellowship of the Ring soundtrack.
Old Man Gloom. Side project of mainman from Isis and members of Cave In and Converge. Very heavy and twisted. Awesome and quite testing.
kid606. Pretty good stuff, haven't tried tripping. I imagine it would be interesting.
Aphex Twin. No explanation needed here either
Queens of the Stone Age. Rated R is a pretty cool album for tripping. Highlights would be Monsters in the Parasol.
Comets of Fire. Similar to Acid Mothers Temple, but more retro rock and less harsh feedback. It's quite feedback induced, but not to the level that AMT go to. As a reviewer wrote "Psychedelic music to make hippies puke".
Acid Mothers Temple. Mind blowing psych freak out rock. If 20 minutes of feedback is not your thing, then I'd advise skipping these guys. Not every song has vast levels of feedback and noise, but most of them tend to have at least one of those moments.
Nick Cave. Might be too depressing for some, but I personally would love this. I see him in concert next month and will be doing acid, so I hope I'm right hehe.
Cult of Luna. Same vein as Isis, cept more walls of epic noise. The first two albums are killer! Avoid if walls of noise and screaming is not your thing. Their last album, Salvation, is probably easier to get into as it uses soundscapes instead of walls of noise (but don't expect any singing or no heaviness).
Lard. Jello Biafra and Ministry brief side project. The Last Temptation is one of the funniest, thought provoking punk albums I've heard. Ministry style, with typical Jello craziness over the top. Highlights are They're Coming to Take Me Away and Can God Fill Teeth. Not for the faint hearted.
Dog Fashion Disco. More crazy music. These guys are a laugh. Crunchy heavy and quite metal tracks crossed with pop and upbeatness. Pogo the Clown is a classic example. Poppy and upbeat song with lyrics about a deranged clown that gets his victims drunk and then takes them home to tortue them. Also, Acid Memoirs has to be one of the coolest weird trip songs to listen to.
Jimi Hendrix. Personal all time fav - Electric Ladyland. Best track - Voodoo Chile. I listened to this twice last time I tripped! Insane song.
Meshuggah. Nuff said. Fav album - Destroy, Erase, Improve. Their EP 'I' is impressive too.
Opeth. Not Damnation, but ORCHID. Their other albums make great trip albums for the metalhead tripper.
Pig Destroyer. Odd choice, I know, but there's something about Prowler in the Yard that makes me want to trip to it. Haven't tried it yet, but I will some day. Guess after a few years of playing it safe, I want to get pummelled down into the rabbit hole.
Secret Chiefs 3. Similar to Mr Bungle. Probably even weirder.
Cyclobe. Dark ambient.
Beecher. Extreme prog metal. Not really that prog, but in the sense that it's progessive it is. No long winding solos, just good metal to expand your mind to.
Dream Theatre. Awesome band.
Chemical Brothers
Cloroform. Sounds like Aphex Twin doing jazz. Odd stuff.
Ephel Duath. Jazz metal. Awesome combination. Thrashes along, then breaks into a saxphone solo.
Clutch. 70s style jam band, cept they're not from the 70s. Very awesome modern retro throw back tunes. Check out Pure Rock Fury.
Estradasphere. Mr Bungle style band. All over the place tunes. Excellent hybrid music.
Explosions in the Sky. Godspeed type rock. Yet different.
Frankenbok. Australian metal band. Greetings and Salutations is my fav album and is quite Patton influenced. Very funny.
Frontline Assembly. EBM. Pretty good heavy dance music. Not techno though.
Ghost. Japanese psych rock band. Pretty good.
Gridlock. Dark ambient. Very dark, but good if you dig that stuff.
High On Fire. Hmm, hard to explain. Pretty much a metal band, but not of the death metal/black metal/thrash metal genre. Some good epic metal tunes.
Negativland. Odd band who make tunes out of samples. They have a radio station.
Neurosis. The pioneers of the genre that Isis and Cult of Luna belong to (whatever it really is). Same style - epic heaviness.
Organum. Ambient. Pretty good meditive style ambient.
Pelican. Instrumental epic metal. Use of weird instruments, including a saw solo (yes, a saw solo).
Primus! Can't believe I didn't see this recommended (maybe it was).
Stone Temple Pilots. Especially their album Purple. Laid back rock album.
Gorillaz. Pretty cool trip band.
Hmmm, I can't think of anymore. I just keep trying the most unexpected things and most of the time it works really well. Gets boring sticking to the same old formulas all the time.

I made an edit to the TripMusic Wiki page to add Digitally Imported. Has anyone ever tripped to DI, or specifically their Chillout (very slow trance) channel? It was amazing when I tried it... I can't really describe how it felt.

damn, where do I start? anything by Simon Posford is a good choice for an intense trip, whether it's Shpongle, Hallucinogen ("In Dub" - the best album, IMO), Younger Brother, Celtic Cross or Mystery of the Yeti. Simon has shown me every corner of my brain and supposedly "In Dub" took my cousin to another world, yes literally.
another one of my favorites is The Disco Biscuits, you can listen to just about any of their shows at www.archive.org. the best thing about Bisco is that they never play a song the same way twice and they connect many of their songs without stopping the beat (I think it's called a segueway). either you'll love em or hate em
just about any 'jamband' is excellent to see live and trippin. the ones I've had the pleasure of seeing live are the String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic, Keller Williams, Gov't Mule, Infected Mushroom, Bassnectar, EOTO, The Schwag (Grateful Dead tribute), DJ Shadow, BoomBox (DJ + electric guitar, some people can't stand it but I love it , Pnuma Trio, Xavier Rudd, Greyboy Allstars, DUBCONSCIOUS!!, Umphrey's McGee and STS9. I'm sure there are others that my coked out, ope'd out, drunk self can't remember.
NO! I'm nowhere close to done.. Cervantes mentioned a few that I feel are very worthy of repeating. Addison Groove Project, KDTU (or any tight funk band for that matter), Bela Fleck, The Beatles (of course), Bob Marley, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Chemical Brothers, MM&W, The Orb, Ott, Particle, Phish (every time I listen to 'Reba' my mind gets thrown into the recipe , PINK muthafuckin FLOYD, and Yes.
you should also check out Rick Wakeman's album Journey to the Centre of the Earth. after I name a few more I'll be done, trust me. MO2 a.k.a Mind Orchestra, Ween, moe., Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, Perpetual Groove (listen to 'Crockett and Tubbs'), Easy Star All Stars (best known for "Dub Side of the Moon"), The New Deal, 1200 Micrograms (hence, the name , Big Organ Trio, Psychedelic Breakfast a.k.a The Breakfast, Dark Star Orchestra, Natural Breakdown, Little Feat, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, sub-ID, Tea Leaf Green, and Yonder Mountain String Band are all great for trippin.

I won't bother repeating the stuff already posted, there's a lot of overlap (shpongle!! woot!) so here are some that you may or may not have heard of:
Sun Ra - anything but esp Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy
Gong - Radio Gnome Trilogy, Zero to Infinity, everything else by them pretty much
If you like Ozric and/or the Orb and haven't heard Gong, check them out, Steve Hillage who collaborates with The Orb, and inspired Ozric, was in Gong for a while
System 7 - Point 3 Water Music
Todd Rundgren - Acapella or Healing (I edit some stuff out of Healing)
Kan'nal - Dreamwalker, Myth Magic, Kan'nal (tribal psychedelic shamanic rock...kicks ass and makes you wanna rip off your clothes and dance around a bonfire!)
Bhagavan Das - Now (spiritual guru chanting sanskrit produced by Mike D from the Beastie Boys)
Om - Frank Natale
Prince - the love symbol album (although 3 Chains of Gold tends to crack me up laughing)
Ian Anderson - Divinities, Twelve Dances with God
Goddess Gaia
Hydroponic Garden - Carbon Based Lifeforms
Love Scene Clear - On the New Day (very very very special and unique music, most people I know have to listen to it a couple of times to let it sink in)
Sub Conscious - Future Primitive

Sorry for bumping this old thread, but I still think it's relevant.
Can anyone recommend some happy, groovy, feel good music? Something like Jamiroquai.
Cheers.

im bout to be eating 7g of mush and i already made a list of songs i want to give a listen while under the influence..though its not everything id like to listen to but sadly mushrooms dont last forever and ill also probably lose interest and wonder off somewhere without listening to all these lol but here is the list i made
Tone- confidence and progress (i love this song to death)
311- use of time
moby- extreme ways, Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?, everloving, inside (this song kind of reminds me of the old sega game gunstar heroes), Guitar Flute & String, whispering wind
red sparowes- pretty much any song by these guys will rock my socks but i was gunna try listening to the whole album "Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun"
pelican- like red sparowes pretty much any pelican song will kick complete ass but i mainly wanted to listen to 'the woods'
FF tactics- this is just one of the songs played durring the many battles in the tactics game and it was probably my favorite song in the whole game...its track 15 on disc one and i guess its called 'a chapel'
nobuo uemastu- this is another final fantasy song called 'compression of time' from ff8 its near the end of the game but i remember when i 1st got the the area with this music playing i hung around in the zone listening to the song for a little too long.. also there are plenty of songs from ff7 ill probably listen to
swans- there are a lot of great songs by swans but i was planning on listening to the entire 'the great annihilator' album
opeth- pretty much all opeth is awesome but i cant listen to everything in one night. patterns in the ivy 2, bleak, Grand Conjuration, Reverie/Harlequin Forest, Beneath the Mire,
shipping news- wax museum
buckethead- again too many good songs but 'Sketches of Spain (For Miles)' will probably be on repeat half the night
neurosis-like everything else on my list i love way too many neurosis songs to listen to all in one night with all the other stuff i want to listen to so i picked just a few.. hidden faces, water is not enough, locust star, stones from the sky, and hopefully the entire 'times of grace' album with grace playing at same time
nine inch nails- mainly just wanted to give a listen to my favorites from nin which include; the persistence of loss, leaving hope, gone still, and all that could have been,
korn- im sure some of you wont like korn but ive been listening to them for as long as i can remember and i still love all thier older stuff so im gunna listen to some!
shpongle- of course how could i not listen to shpongle.. any and all shpongle will do but the song '..and the day turned to night' always made me space out while listening to it even while sober so its on the list
agalloch- the lodge

Can't believe nobody said it.
Hawkwind. Space motherfucking rock. My favourite album is Doremi Fasol Latido, the live album Space Ritual is very, very enjoyable, but they have awesome songs in all of them (more than 20!).
Check this fanmade video, amazing.

I listened to a band called Starfucker last trip. It's good music! Very psychedelic...and they seem to like philosophy.
On light trips:
Atmosphere Tribe Called Quest Grand Buffet is FUCKING INTENSE! on mushrooms! It's hard to understand lyrical music on harder trips...
On harder trips:
Ratatat Sigur Ros Radiohead If you don't mind crying... Rodrigo Y Gabriella Sigur Ros sent me somewhere beautiful...It's a must-try.

Best band you can listen to while trippn is Led Zeppelin!!!! Good god, I didnt like them that much before I tripped on 2ce, then listened to them. Now one of my fav. bands ever. Cant get enough of them. And when I turn them on when high, my high is just shot to another realm. They are just magical when high.

Wow, lots of great music in this thread! I will just add one artist that I haven't seen mentioned yet- VIBRASPHERE. They have some very relaxing, atmospheric psytrance/ambient music that puts me a in great place.

The Album Leaf, The Flaming Lips, The Church, Pink Floyd (specifically Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Animals), Minus the Bear, FC Kahuna, The Beatles, Across the Universe Soundtrack, The Chemical Brothers, MGMT, Architecture in Helsinki, The Shins
Ok got a bit carried away.. butThe Album Leaf is definitely the best imo. Not too many people have heard of them, but they're really chill music. Here's a few of their songs
Love love love this video as well.

My favorite artists to listen to high/tripping:
1) Animal Collective. The best music I've heard in an altered state. Listening to this music sober reminds me of what tripping is like. Sung Tongs, Merriweather Post Pavilion, and the Peacebone single are my favorite releases from them.
2) Shpongle (especially "Tales of the Inexpressible" or "Are You Shpongled?"): Shpongle's just great. Every single song is a forest of beats and sounds that takes you on a journey.
3) Porcupine Tree - "The Sky Moves Sideways": One of the best tripping albums I've heard. A masterpiece of psychedelic music.
4) Rush: Beautiful descriptions of life and philosophy, portrayals of events, progressive and varied instrumentals... listening to Rush is the musical equivalent of the clarity received from psychedelics.
5) Pink Floyd - "Dark Side of the Moon": Another masterpiece, plain and simply
Other great listens:
Tobacco - "Fucked Up Friends" The Beatles - "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" Gorillaz - "Gorillaz"
EDIT: Just had to add, "Selected Ambient Works" by Aphex Twin is completely mindblowing.

hit the nail right on the fucking head dude! the beatles are unarguably the best band to have ever walked this earth. its impossible to pick a favorite song because ive had so many. ive been listening to 'dear prudence' a lot lately. best albums are revolver, magical mystery tour, abbey road, and of course peppers. but they dont have an album that isnt good. BEATLES!

I would say my favorite thing to do is go on Pandora Radio and listen to the Gorillaz station. That way you don't even have to worry about changing the music or running out of songs. Good trippy music for sure.

How about some classical?
Steve Reich - Music For 18 Musicians This is one of my favorite compositions I've yet encountered. 18 musicians making music that sounds like angels playing with thunder and rain.
Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto... The recording with Krystian Zimmerman, conduced by Seijo Ozawa at the BSO is absolutely fantastic..
I am a composer, by the way :-)
If anyone would like any more for classical, I'd be happy to expand my recommendations!

I don't know if this has been said, but any music is tripping music!! For example, after dosing 2 really strong doses at a small fest, a bluegrass band called the Manatawny Creek Ramblers came on stage and they were amazing! If I was sober I would not have gotten down like I got down that night.

Shpongle - All their CD's Pink Floyd - Damn anything they have done Kick Bong - Flower Power (such a chill ass cd) Ott - Bad ass psychedelic dubby music Puff Dragon - Only has one CD full of gems, great psybient/psydub music. Entheogenic - Good music Sound Tribe Sector 9 - Artifact is the best CD, anything after sucks anything before is good.

Finally moving is probably my favorite track of his. The way you talk of him, I could probably guess where your from.
There are few genres I don't like and fewer I don't like while tripping. Country and this new-age snap-crunk-rap bullshit that everyone listens to now are at the top of the list.
I mainly prefer rap's Golden Era through the mid-90's, any music produced electronically, and a plethora of rock from Indie to Norwegian deathmetal.
BUT what music do I like to trip to?
LSD - Electronica all the way, mainly Dubstep.
Saw this guy not too long ago. It was INSANE. Took approx. 600mics of LSD before and indulged in a little molly while there.
Like a little DnB as well.
Shrooms - mostly rock and a little OutKast, anything close to Earth

I tried listening to Pink Floyd (DSOTM) but found it to be strange, being that I listen to it normally, and it didn't give me the usual sensation.
So, ever since then, I try listening to music I've never heard or perhaps just heard of the artist. This has led me to find Great artists like Tom Waits, and great bands like Modest Mouse and other early Indie/Progressive stuff.
My next trip, I'm gonna try Godspeed! You Black Emperor, and also bringing along Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, SquarePusher, and figured The Shins, Maybe some Older Modest Mouse, etc.
I find that Led Zeppelin and other Classic Rock is unbearable, or I just end up making fun of the guitar the whole time, until someone finally turns it off, and puts on something more agreeable to the intellect.
Nevertheless, music is absolutely life-changing on Psychedelics. Some, however, may find this more relevant on Mushrooms, since LSD seems to be much more energetic...not the lazy mood Shrooms so wonderfully induce. ANYWAY, whatever does it for you.

Yeah, I like listening to stuff I don't know very well.
Often times, I will listen to something once, decide it will be fun to trip to, and save it for my next journey.
I do enjoy the opposite as well. If I am extremely familiar with something, tripping to it can make it sound new again.

May sound ridic... but I'm actually just getting into electronic music. THE REASON: most friends who encouraged me to listen to it, were all people who hated things I find "unhateable" (i.e. Roy Orbison; Prince; Tom Waits; etc.).
NOT SAYING this is universal - I'm sure quite the contrary - BUT, one thing they all had in common, and may have been what drove them to electronic (once again, this is not an absolute), was that they were ALL of them admittedly Tone-Deaf.
One of my buddies ONLY listens to electronic, hates all forms of music with lyrics, and it turned out that he was often made fun of by family members when he was young because he couldnt sing-along in the car, and he didnt know why. (Being tone-deaf must really suck, but one must understand, those who are not tone-deaf, will never understand.)
I feel that many people get into electronic because they are people that hit play, close their eyes, and leave existence for a short while - very therapeutic. HOWEVER, many of the ones clinging to it, sadly, are tone-deaf individuals who are rebelling against all those genres they could never hum-along with... meaning most anything w/ lyrics.
ULTIMATELY, Electronic has some wonderful artists, and it mixes great w/ psilocybin... Skrillex is NOT one of those artists.

Nine inch nails has inspired some deep thought on various aspects of my life while tripping, Trent seems to be a self loathing person with deeper issues but he made some amazing music that never lost integrity as most aged artists did in that genre and music in general IMO.
downward spiral: starts bright and happy but ends quite dark and in introspective angst.
broken: is a good cd as well but itll scare you a few times.
the fragile: would probably be a great trip track if your still new or not a big fan
pretty hate machine: I swear this cd was madre to trip to, next time your tripping and on you tube watch the official "Head like a hole" video , theres people dancing in a head and a bunch of trippy stuff.

I'm a self professed music wizard
I have to say Shulman - Retroscape is the best damn song I trip to from the album In Search of a Meaningful Moment. Highly recommend it, hope you enjoy it as much me and my friends do, you have to give the album 2-3 listens before passing judgement ..but you'll love it.
Second favorite would be The Unexpected Visitor also by Shulman ... incredible songs when I'm tripping they are the greatest experiences in my trip.. please try them for yourselves and let me know what you think =)

I'm surprised only one person mentioned Alcest. It's a bit different from the usual recommendations, as it's really intense (while being very dreamy). I was listening to Les Voyages De L'Ame (voyages of the soul - you'd be amazed how trippy the lyrics are!) last time and oh.my.gosh! it was like an hourlong orgasm
I can't think of anything more apt for tripping. It hits you like a flood and brings you to those wonderful realms that the lyrics sing about ^_^

My go to tripping music is Pink Floyd, specially Dark Side Of The Moon, Obscured By Clouds, a Saucerful Of Secrets... and I really love watching Live At Pompeii while I'm tripping.
And Yawning Man is unbelievably trippy, too. I'll leave the full album for anyone wanting to check it out.
Trippy instrumental desert rock... I can't even begin to imagine how amazing it must have been to go to one of these guys generator parties out in the middle of the desert...

Hey all; first post! I don't frequent forums, but want to share some musical wealth! :-)
After doing a google search to see what tunes peeps were into these days for the grand event, I found keys a lot of the same classic rock and electronica, so I thought I'd throw out some stuff that might be different (I'm a bit of an old timer that still indulges every few years but had lots of fun back in the day).
First off, I like making a long playlist to avoid that hassle of switching music the whole time; I'll go with more beat-driven stuff w vocals for the first 45mins at most and then gradually ease into mellow mostly-instrumental stuff. Anything abrasive during the meat of the trip has always turned things a tad uncomfortable, music or anything else. Some get bored w chill music but it aligns me with how I function in that state. I also find that after a few hours, lyrics can often come off as dictative and sour things up; wordless vocals or positivity works best for me.
Anyhoo, here are some suggestions:
Most traditional ethnic music: tuvan throat singing (free albums on ubuweb still, I believe; tanya tagaq "anamism"(?) Is a bit western but amazing), tibetan chant, japanese shakuhachi, LONG true indian ragas, iranian chamber music (howard shores naked lunch score gives a brief taste), etc.
Non-beat-driven ambient: harold budd ("as long as I can hold my breath" long remix version), steve Roach, robert rich, lustmord & death cube k (darker), david lynch soundscapes, john zorn & bill lazwell have loads of great stuff but you have to do your homework because they literally work in every genre; their mellows are my favs.
Spoken word: robert anton wilson, fred rogers (simplistic genius pairs well w trips; great for bad trips), david lynch "catching the big fish", hmm... drawing blanks, haha.
Agnes obel, chelsea wolfe, julee cruise, secret chiefs 3, orange tulip conspiracy, atomic ape, devin townsend "ghost", les descrets, arvo part, sharon isbin, jonas hellborg, shakti, cocorosie, philip glass, Debussy, bernie worrell, jimmy scott; loads more but I'll leave it at that.
I've also found that while plain ol names can come off as boring, much of the time the groups with trippy sounding names tend to be generic sounding, like they're trying too hard.
But yeah, some good stuff to check out!

Yes The Mars Volta I will def try while tripping....but into the list:
Chemical Brothers - Dig your own Hole*****(a must have album) - Further - Come with Us***** (and if you time the title track with the peak of LSD,MDMA you will be amazed, that song will blast your brain out the back of your head. The Crystal Method -Vegas***** (must have classic older trip stuff) LSD/MDMA/DXM+Aderrall (wow) Air- 10,000HZ Legend*****(must have) - moon safari (kinda chill, but amazing) Fourtet- Anything, any albums, from this dude and you will be in heavenly bliss! - I would recommend albums: Rounds, Pause, and Everything Ecstatic Portishead - Dummy album is fucking amazing. This music can produce a very sexy, sensual mood for couples wanting to melt their souls together. RJD2 - ANYTHiNG by this man is fucking beautiful tripping and he masterfully mixes strings, horns, guitars, etc. over the tastiest drum tracks you can imagine....if RJD2 doesn't get your foot tapping you may need to see Doctor...quick. DJ Shadow - same as above applies for him but heads-ups, some of his stuff leans into the more hip-hop stuff as well, amazing shit! Well, I'll think of more later but try these out and let me know what you think! Also some more off the top of head: Bjork, PJ Harvey if you want sensual female vocals that are blissful. Have Fun!

I have four suggestions. First, Sun Ra plays standards. Seek that out. He is from another planet with his jazz (piano)standards.
Second, anything by Grant Green Grant green made the best acid music I've ever heard. For me personally. He was a trance-inducing sort of jazz guitarist. Even when he played his supremely awesome funky-jazz. If I can turn even one person onto Grant Green it would be worth posting his music here
Also this album, Ravi Shankar & Ali Akbar Khan in concert 1972. It's sublime
Pharoah Sanders - Harvest Time
This is some divine timeless music.

seriously though and without myself acting like an asshole just because the internet is generally poisonous.
Jerry Garcia band Don't Let Go 3.27.82
One of the finest recordings ever. It's on the "Garcia discs" compilation too, as it should be. It's one of the most stand out bits of improv I have ever heard. It's up there with anything insanely good.

Since this is my specialty. It is supposed to be distorted especially on shitloads of acid or something. Lsd Being amazing for music so long as you are not listening to crappy music. Polyrhythms and that play into the hallucinatory sensory input. That's why good mathematical music is best for so many people. The grateful dead for example, sound like insect parts crackling and making love. Very few bands nail it like that band did with the help of Jerry. To start off your appreciation of psychedelic music interpretation, quiet jazz and Ravi Shankar might change your experience with music on psychedelics. If you take enough, that is just enough for music to sound rather insane and hard to enjoy. That is unless your music is begging you to listen to it on psychedelics. Grant Green. Listen to this with your friends sometime. It will blow your mind how beautiful music is on almost any dose of psychedelics. ---->

Somebody needs to listen to Miles Davis - Kind of Blue while tripping tomorrow. I hope this post helps.
Then listen to Grant Green's "idle moments" or something by Grant Green. Or his "latin bit" album, or "his majesty king funk" for a more party deal.

What beats psychedelic pop and rock, and progressive rock, from the 60s and 70s? I prefer albums over singles because it's more suited to the psych experience. I particularly love British music. Apologies to women, it's all male and I'm also a guy. All music is personal taste though. Here are some of my best: Serge Gainsbourg - melody nelson (my first lsd experience), a french album Gerard Manset - gerard manset, a french album Bob Marley - virtually all his stuff, jamaican music British: Caravan - if i could do it I'd do it all over you, in the land of the grey and pink The Pretty Things - parachute, phillip debarge, Robert Wyatt - rock bottom (a great album but needs a little time), Spring - spring, Pink Floyd - wish you were here, the piper at the gates of dawn, Yes - close to the edge, Strawbs - from the witchwood, grave new world, ghosts Nick Garrie - the nightmare of jb stansilas, Kaleidoscope - kaleidoscope, white faced lady, faintly blowing, from home to home, Camel - camel, mirage, moonmadness Complex - complex, the way we feel 10cc - sheet music Elo - eldorado Laghonia - etcetera, from Peru Brian Eno - taking tiger mountain by strategy, here come the warm jets
I also like a few american bands: Spirit - 12 dreams of doctor sardonicus, family plays together Crosby Stills and Nash (and young) David Crosby - if i could only remember my name Pavlov's Dog - pampered menial, at the sound of the bell The Merry Go Round/Emitt Rhodes
Just a few of my favourites.
