Leaders say widespread drug abuse is hurting southern OR

MEDFORD, Ore. - Widespread drug abuse is making it tough to find good workers in southern Oregon.
That's according to business leaders in Medford who met at a panel today with Senator Ron Wyden to help him develop an economic plan for Oregon's future.

Wyden is traveling by bus to nine cities around the state, listening to local business leaders to get input.

In Medford, the senator was told that businesses are having difficulty filling jobs because so many of the applicants can't pass a drug test.

Jerry Evans, owner of the Jacksonville Inn restaurant, raised the issue of methamphetamine abuse, after other business leaders said stable funding was needed for public schools.

But Evans argued that it doesn't do any good to have a good education if there's a rampant substance abuse problem in the society at large.

Others quickly backed him up.

Fund the war on drugs, not public schools!

The only thing I understood from that was that they wouldn't know there was a drug abuse problem if they didn't drug test them, it looks like. What are the effects of the drug abuse other than the inability to pass a drug test?

Thought I do love drug tests. Which one should we test tonight? :tongue2:

Man, it's hilarous how outright they come out with it. It's only a problem when buisnesses can't find employees due to failed drug tests. It's obivouis that they don't care about the actual people.

Here's an idea, people who use drugs are often productive and intelligent members of society! Wow! What a concept!

(that's not to say that serouis drug abuse isn't a problem, but a positive in a drug test isn't necessarly a sign of abuse)

Very true.  That region of the country is an interesting one.  My family has had many connections with the town just 15 miles south of Medford, namely Ashland, Oregon.  I go up there a few times each year and am always amazed at how friendly and kind everyone is.  However, when visiting Medford, the feel changes quite abruptly and the scene veers away from the liberal nature-loving upper-class hippie feel of Ashland (and to a lesser extent Talent, which is four miles up the road towards Medford), towards a more red-kneck big(er)-city style of life.  It doesn't surprise me that they highlighted Medford, but even Medford, though grappling with more of the urban problems than nearby towns such as Ashland and Talent, is still a fairly clean city with all the usual ammenities to be found in any middle-class living space.

Anyway, I think that Twirling brings up a good point, in that drug use does not equate to drug abuse.. and seeing as such nearby towns are so liberal, there is bound to be a wide availability of substances.  Thus, it is incredibly unfortunate  that somoene would argue against education, in a society that is trying to tackle a problem of potential drug abuse where they certainly won't be able to remove the substances themselves.

:wtf: .. education is key, yo!
