PF Tek, 1st Shot
    #2965002 - 08/04/04 03:25 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Hi, this is this guy I know's first shot at growing (he's got 11 inoc. PF jars, had 12), seems simple enough. He gave me this pic to show you guys. One of his jars got filled with ants but luckily he caught it (and trashed the jar) before they got into any other jars, he subsequently put the jars into 2 big plastic bags and then in his dresser (he's making sure the air stays fresh of course).

He'll probably be purchasing some rubbermaid type containers and ant traps today. He'll use 1 rubbermaid to hold the colonizing jars and the other for fruiting them on damp perlite, and put ant traps around the rubbermaids. He's gonna case a few of the cakes in a gladware container with damp vermiculite, and fruit the rest as cakes.

Any questions or suggestions welcome, thx shroomery / shroomerites, without your help this woulda been a hassle, for sure.<br>

pic is really big if you click on it.

Looks good. You might get better results if you case with coco coir and verm, the 40/60 mix.

I always had better results using a finer grade of vermiculite.

Definatley try fruiting a few of them without casing. That is the original TEK, then move onto experimenting with TEKs that get higher yields.

Yeah, PF reccomends using fine grade verm, even though in his pics he has coarse stuff (he puts a note that he did this so that it is more easily viewed).

Ah, afoaf used the MMGG's description to get to inoculation. Fine verm works better you say? Thx for letting me know, any idea where afoaf could get 'fine grade' verm in the US?

afoaf whent to Lowes, and to a local plant store, when originally looking for verm. Each store had 1 brand of verm for sale and 1 brand only. afoaf bought the one at the plant store because the bag had a little window through which afoaf could see the verm, and its appearance reminded afoaf of the verm afoaf had seen in pics on this / other sites. Does it say on the bag what grade it is? (afoaf doesn't think it does on the bag afoaf bought).

update: afoaf's mycelium is on all the jars in some force or another, all the allen strain now have at least one little white fuzzy circle on them. The AC basically looks like the allen did a day or so ago.

Perhaps this thread should be moved to the 'grow log and pictures' section, maybe the mods would do that?

here's an update,
afoaf sez:

" My jars are growing very well. So far I have lost 1 jar to ants (trashed), 1 jar to cobweb mold (trashed), and 3 jars to orange stuff. Today a friend and I cut all the (quite healthy) mycelium off the 3 contaminated cakes and brought it to a low boil. We did 2 extractions, strained them through a linen cloth, and then drank the liquid.

Breaking up the mycelium and working with it helped me to learn more about what exactly mycelium is, what it looks, feels, smells, and tastes like. Most of the new data that I gathered was on it?s consistency, smell, and taste. It was harder than I thought it would be, surprisingly dense. It smelled and tasted exactly like p. Cubensis mushrooms. What psilocybin / psilocin was extracted from the mycelium that was in the 3 jars, was enough to give us each a pleasant body vibe, but a mere taste of things to come. Praise the Lord.

I will have to buy my Rubbermaid / perlite very soon, I have a jar that will be done in a day or two. Most of the rest of the jars that remain are truly beginning to show very rapid, rhyzomorphic (ropy), growth. I have 1 jar that is basically doing nothing, and 6 that are growing properly, at different stages. "

here's a pic he took.

afoaf im'd me again, this time he sais:

"Screw perlite, shit is nasty. Made a lava rock pod, altho I need to buy 1 more bag of lava rocks for it tomorrow, should I put the cake directly on the lava rocks or keep it on the jar lid? The mycelium is starting to poke out off the cake all over like snail eyes. Are these called 'hyphal knots'?"

If you can't find fine grade verm, make it. Just put 1-2 cups (dry)coarse verm in a blender, make it as fine as you want.

I know this belongs in the growlog forum but it seems more would see it here that can use it. That and I?m sure most have seen it already but maby somebody can use this to help them out.

Grow Log
Tek : PF
Strain : South American [SA]
Spores : Came from homemade prints. 36 total jars to be injected.
Substrate :Brown Rice Flour [BRF] and Vermiculite [Verm]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10:15 PM 3/4/03 : Project is started. Jar prep is just putting small holes in the lids for the spore syringe and then taping them closed until inoculation. Tape used is the standard black electrical tape. First batch of jars is mixed. The mix used is 2 parts verm, 1 part water, and 1 part brf. [ This mix is the max fruiting formula by PF.] Mix is put into 1/2 pint canning jars lightly, not packed in, and left it airy. Put substrate in until it reaches the threads of the jar, then add dry verm the rest of the way.
Jars are PCd at 10psi or 240f for a period of 45 minutes. Then jars were left to sit overnight to cool.

8:39 PM 3/5/2003 : First batch of jars injected. (24 jars)

10:04 AM 3/6/2003 : Incubator is running to low 77F. Going to turn it up today.

5:45 PM 3/6/2003 : Second batch of jars is in the PC will be injected tomorrow. Turned up incubator runs at 83F. 86F is the best and if the incubator is 83F and myc growing in the jars is suppose to create a little heat I figure this should work out well.

1:11 PM 3/7/2003 : Second batch of jars is done. (12 jars)

12:10 PM 3/9/2003 : Jars are doing good, no signs of contams

2:54 AM 3/19/2003 : Tape removed from the holes today and coffee filters put over the top of the jars for added protection. Holes were opened so the CO2 in the jars could escape. I gave 12 jars to a friend who kept fucking up. 24 jar?s about 75%done.

12:13 PM 3/22/2003 : Well it?s Saturday and the jars will probably be done by the 25th. So it was 36 jars. 12 were given to a friend, 24 done by Tuesday.

10:26 PM 3/23/2003 : 15 jars were done enough to put into dunk. I dunk and cold shock before birthing and after every flush. The other 9 jars have a spot the size of a pea that has to be covered so I?ll do those on the 25th.

7:17 PM 3/24/2003 : 15 jars put into the pod. Put in and put a layer of moist verm on top. With geolite I just put the cakes on it. With some other chambers I put the cake on a lid filled with verm. This is done to give the shrooms on the bottom and the top of the cake some added moisture.
The other 9 jars just finished so I?m going to give them a couple more days to make sure the middle of the cake is done.

4:57 PM 3/27/2003 : 5 More cakes birthed today, 4 left going to do them tomorrow or 3/29/2003

3:58 PM 3/29/2003 : Well I lost another cake. My wife?s little 1 cake pod made from a 2 liter and a small fish pump and a little geolite used up her last cake so I gave her a SA to grow. The last 3 are in the cold shock dunk.
So the total is 36 jars done all colonized with no contams. 12 given to a friend, 1 to the wife, 23 mine

12:08 PM 3/30/2003 : Last of jars put in

12:02 PM 3/31/2003 : The first 15 cakes are pinning nicely and some have shrooms coming from the bottom.

11:01 AM 4/3/2003 : Things look to be going well.

1:02 AM 4/4/2003 : Took the first flush from four of the cakes. More will be done later today.

5/8/2003 : Total 23 cakes 164 grams dried.

From what I?ve seen this needs to be up for a little bit.

afoaf asks:
"Hmm... sounds like I should dunk in the fridge between flushes and put wet verm on top of my cakes..
magash said those are half pint jars, but the ones pictured in his post seem larger than that. How large are those jars you used in that post and how much innoculant was injected into each jar?"

3SR always only had four. You probably saw the pics of Magash's growlog post which had many many more.
