Any references?

Arora's "Mushrooms Demystified" says; "EDIBILITY: Unknown. Do not experiment!" He goes on to say that it can be used to dye yarn.

I have not heard of any corts being psychoactive. As there are several species of corts which are deadly, I would heed Arora's advice and not experiment.

There are some active species of Cortinarius, however there are so many damn species it makes it hard to positively identify. I would not risk it.

If you meen some mushrooms with cortinas are active, then you are correct; these are in the genus Gymnopilus. However, if you meen that some species of Cortinarius are psychoactive, then please give us some latin names, because this is news to me.

As the two posts below you stated. there are no active species of Cortinarius,

There are thirteen species of Gymnopilus but I always tell everyone to avoid both Conocybe ang Gymnopilus species because several of them resemble the deadly Galerina species and the deadly Conocybe filaris and Lactea which contain amatoxins and phalotosins similar to those in the deadly amanita mushrooms.

mj

Stick to the black spored shrooms of Copelandia and Panaeolus and the chocolate to purple-brown blue staining members of the Psilocybe generas.

Sorry if this is a naive question. mj talks about "clack spored shrooms" of Copelandia and panaeolus. What does that mean for a beginner?
Also the gymnopilus spectabilis has seemed so far a seemingly easy mushroom to identify, and I planned to look this fall. Orangish spore and fruiting body, growing generally in clusters on wood, (conifer and deciduous both okay?). Relatively thick stalk. There are no other "poisonou" gyms in my guide apart from those warning of mushrooms that could be confused with spectabilis. What exactly can I confuse them with? Is the spectabilis itself safe enough?

That should hae read as black spored sp hrooms such as panaeolus and Copelandia species.

As for Big laughing Gyms. they are the bitterest of tasting mushrooms ever eaten and gross your mouth out weather in soup, tea, pizza or jhust plain eating them and they are j high in kavalactones simimilar to those found in Kava plants and very rare in psilocybine int he gyms. spectabilis.

Have a shroomy day and excuse my typos. I try to correct them later when i notice them.

laughing gyms are one of the easiest damn actives to identify... n. fasciculare's are even worse tasting than the BLG's.
