84 degrees too much for jars?
    #3007976 - 08/16/04 03:59 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

All rightt, folks.  So, AFOAF has done some jars up, and realized that when the incubator is set to "optimal temp" of 84 degrees, things stall out and dry out.  However, this bud of mine has taken jars out of the incubator, and then things pick up.
THis guy has also noticed that when a tub-in-tub is used for rye pints, the jars furthest from the fish heater colonize much faster.
AFOAF has a thermometer right next to the heater in the incubabtor.  The temp, then should be somewhere below 84 degrees for the jars.
Ideas?  Can someone explain this to a newb?  Is this internal temp of growing myc?
I was trying to follow Magash's tek to the lzetter.  Please, I am asking for the call from the voice of experience.  THanks y'all!

They say you should set up heater to 80 degrees because the jars create some heat on their own. Maybe because you have the heater set to 84 the jars create heat and they get too hot? I dunno.

too hot is 106 degrees, if your doing pf cakes maybe you dont have enough water when you mix them up... btw 106 is the themal death of myc. I have mine around 82 and they do just fine... if you from experience see them working better at less than 84 then do it less than 84!!! plain and simple this hobbie is purely trial and error... HAVE fun!

if u are using a tub in a tub with a fish heater there is all kind of differnt temps in
there. The water in mine is well over a 100. the first half inch from the bottom
of the incubator is 92, the next 10 inches it drops to about 80. so ur not going to
get the temp perfect with this method. just try to keep it mid 80's and ull do fine.

Actual substrate temp is 2 degrees higher than ambient air temp so 84 would give you a substrate temp of 86 which is perfect. I'm thinking to that water content is off also (common for newbies). If using a double bin with heated water in the bottom bin (next best thing next to a commercial incubator IMO) make sure the water is not contacting the bottom of the top container, adjust so temp inside incubator is 84 degrees. No tape on any holes (Has really never been a good idea IME/IMHO). GL

you did rye and they dried out in the incubator?? you musta done something wrong in the process. usually rye tends to hold water rather well.
