Northern Ontario Mushrooms
    #3007676 - 08/16/04 12:22 AM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Was up in northern ontario this weekend, and happened to come across some red-capped mushrooms... Unfortunately didn't have a camera on me and only remember that it had a red cap, white gils and was growing on pine needles. Any estimates based on info?

Probably a Russula or Amanita.

Here in California I find many Amanita muscaria during the winter months in pine needles.

Did the cap have white spots, or was it just a solid red cap?

Solid red, no white spots

I'd have to say about 3-5 inches

im pretty sure that it wasnt an amanita if it didnt have white spots, but then again ive seen pics of muscaria's that had like 1 or 2 spots.

Well, its safe to say that it was most likely NOT edible/active.

If you want a positive ID, read the Forum Rules and list some additional information.

I wasn't checking to see if it was an edible/active, I was just curious on some possibilities for the type of mushroom. I was unfortunately without a notebook to copy information down or a camera, so I can only give a description from memory alone. None of them had any signs of a veil, their cap was a slightly duller red then an amanita, I wasn't able to take a spore print, they had no white spots/warts on them, were found growing on pine needles in northern Ontario, Canada, gills were white and stem was white, and had a very weak smell (had to have nose practically pressed to mushroom to get a good scent). That's about all I can remember..
