ii thought i responded to this earlier. hmmm....

anyways... yes, he used a small amount of peroxide in the boiling water to dampen the perlite, and he's used a spray bottle of the boiled water/peroxide to keep the perlite moist ever since. so i guess the pink could be from peroxide, but i've read a few posts about a pink contam that smells kinda tart and i've had a few wiffs of tartness, but since the last time he sprayed with peroxide water it hasn't been noticeable. still pink spots though... *shrug* any other thoughts, comments, or suggestions?

If you are getting a sour smell I would get rid of the perlite. Sour and pink is a bacterial infection. Either dump the old stuff or sanantise it. Make sure you sanatise your terrarium too. You may not have a problem with the contam on your cakes, but why risk it?

the best thing to do with perlite is to wash it after ever flush and drain and replace in your tank, yes a little more work...but it's a small price to pay...
