blowing glass pipes
    #2822310 - 06/23/04 08:45 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Ive been looking high and low for a quick guide to see how to make glass pipes. All i find is books in the $40-50 range and most are 3 step book's and im not ready to throw $150 into books just yet. Anyone into glassblowing here? I was wondering what the basic tools are i will need besides a torch. I was told its $1000 to get started, how so? Dont i need something to slowly bring the temp down so it dosent shatter? Any good sources for the tools, glass, and fuming rods?

Good luck on finding a 'quick guide' to blowing glass...
My buddy has been doing it for about 4 years and is one of the most creative people I know, and is just now making some really cool shit. he has been trained by a local head shop.

It's expensive, and very hard, from what I hear. there's a ton of different kinds of glass with different kiln and torch requirements... sorry i can't be of more help

Find a book on blowing scientific glassware. I have one at home, I will look up the title, if I remember.

yea these are all works that were sold but you might be able to contact the artist and see if he still has it or if he knows what headhop its at. Or you can ask him to make a new one to your specs or ideas but expect to pay a decent amount because these guys are pros.

After my reaserch it sounds simple to get started. You just need to learn the trades teks. Some even self teach and make new teks, but you need a good foundation before you get crazy as with any hobby.

Theres an assortment of links to forums and informing sites from my glasspipes.org link. You will need either videos to see how its done or be tought first hand as an aprentince by a local glassblower if possible.

It isnt a cheap hobby to get good at. To get started you just need a simple torch to make simple spoons that break easily because of rapicd cooling making weak glass structure. Later as you get into making larger durable pieces you will need a oven to slowly bring the temps down for better glass structure. Then you will want buy precious metals for fuming and an assortment of glass colors and shades.

I already have a kiln that I can use as an annealing kiln.

If nothing else, a hot oven is better than nothing at all.

A hot oven would work cranked up then slowly brought down. But still to get a strong piece you need temps that allow for the glass to flow out more.

You could also play with things like covering the piece in ash so the temp is slowly brought down.

I believe they use vermiculite.

Someone suggested to me that I get a National 3a torch for $60 + a $50 stand.

$110 for a useable torch to learn on ain't bad. Good torches run into the thousands.

I read its a good idea insead of buying a fancy $500+ torch whigh a big burner and a detail flame up top just have two national torches attached one above the other i guess in a vice(?) and have a pointy tip one on the top and a broad flame tip on the other lower one. You also need tools to handle the glass and a bowl poker. When you get started post pics of some work no mater how retarted it looks

Looks like safety glasses for borosilicate work are going to run $350-$375.

whats borosilicate? Im sure you can use a welding helmet with the right shade lens. I can look at the sun with shade 10 and only see a dim ball.

You need to be able to see what you are doing when you're holding hot glass.

I think a pair of Rose Didymium Eyeglasses and some shade 5 welders flips should be enough to get by when workng with borosilicate.

Borosilicate is a kind of glass. Pyrex is made of borosilicate glass. All the good pipes are made of borosilicate glass.

My first investment is going to be a set of contemporary lampworking vols. 1 and 2. They seem to be the most highly reccomended books for starting out lampworking.

At least that's what all the pipe blowers tell me.

Then again, they also told me I would need $400 glasses, which I don't, at least not right now. I just want to see if I like it or not really. If I were selling pipes I would probably grab a pair of the $400 ones and it would be worth it.
