    #3006247 - 08/15/04 08:12 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

so far it's been a good year for a mushroom hunter. got some poundage of cubes while in florida, 18 pounds of black trumpets, a couple pounds of chanterelles, gristtes, blushers, tawny milk caps, a bunch of boletes, tasted a destroying angel(smells and tastes the same... sweet), yellow spindels, swamp beacons, out of season scaly pholitas, lots of white clefts, bulb corts, yellow speck purple corts, club jelly, sweetbreads, and i didn't forget the hordes of russulas, ah man... i can go on and on... there are mushrooms everywhere. big laughing gyms and fly agarics are on the way. mayhap we goes back to the boondocks and sticks to hop a barb into a pattie. happy huntings folks. peace.

Mushroom expert.com described the smell as:

"Smell: Distinctive in older specimens--rather foul."

Not sweet.

well they smell and taste sweet to me, although the one i tasted wasn't matured yet... i'll keep it in mind next time. some people think mushrooms in general smell foul, others tend to think they smell good... most don't even taste. peace.

Just curious. why did you taste it? I once tasted a deadly Galerina to verify that it was not a Gym. I can't think of any good reason to taste a Destroying Angle, anybody can tell what they are just by looking at them.

Tasting a deadly Galerina would have ki;lled you within five to seven days. So I am sure you never tasted a deadly Galerina. And even if you did that would be stupid. One 16 year old girl ate half a one and tw her two teenage male friends ate a few thinking they were Psilocybenstuntzii. The girl died after five days and the kids both went on kydney dialysis for the rest of their lives. the girl died on christmas day in 1982. She and here friends were afraid to goto the hospital because they were afraid they would be prosecuted for trying to eat illegal psilocybian mushrooms.

This is no llaughingmatter. Do not taste shrooms to see if they are good to eat. The deadly amanitas are reportedly some of the best tasting mushrooms ever eaten, until they die.

i tasted the destroying angel just to add to my mushroom experience, naturally i didn't swallow it... tasting a galerina without swallowing it wouldn't kill you unless you were in sorry health(of course, one shouldn't pop a whole mushroom for a taste) it's true amanitas are one of the best tasting mushrooms. i eat blushers and tawny grisettes every once in awhile. every year i also make tea once or twice out of amanita muscarias... it's turned into an annual event for the past 4 years. happy hunting. peace.

in norway a few summers ago, a friend and i were walking back from the forest when we spotted sulfur tufts(n. fasciculare) glowing greenish-yellow in a fairy ring on the buried roots of an old tree stump... we knew what they were, yet there was some tickling our brains, explaining to us that it would be ok to eat them... so we gathered a bunch, dried them out, and ate about 15 dry grams each... very weird and confusing visual experience.

MJ,

I think you may have misunderstood me.

Six years ago when I first began hunting Big Laughing Gyms, I found what i now know to be deadly galerinas; they look somewhat similar to BLGs so i tasted one to see if it was bitter; it was not, so i spit it out and rinsed my mouth with water.

Eating unidentified mushrooms is stupid and dangerous, not my style.

If you are still concerned about my bioassay of the blue Gymnopilus from Ohio, which you have not been able to identify, then oh well. I knew it was safe, and I can now guarantee that those mushrooms are psilocybian and potent. Some of us don't have access to psilocybes and pans, and don't want to associate with drug dealers. God gives me Gyms; I gratefully accept them.

I have spores if you are interested, I don't want money, just the fame.

Peace friend.

It's dangerous for you to suggest that a poisonous mushroom, (Naematoloma fasciculare, Hypholoma fasciculare... Sulfer Tufts), is psychoactive.

This mushroom is poisonous; please do not eat it.

i am not suggesting anyone to eat sulfur tufts, i am just saying i do. what's good for me may not be good for you. i am responsible for my own actions and i have never been poisoned thru misidentifaction, only intention. unless you don't already know, some field guides list the psilocybes as poisonous others as hallucinegenic... yet the question remains, what is the mystery of the mushroom? and yes, big laughing gyms are earths gift to those men who don't have the luxury of hopping a barb to pick a few cubes. if i was a fool, i wouldn't be here writing this, i would have long ago rotted my liver and kidneys into mush. all mushrooms have a purpose, yet you have to respect them in order to figure it out.

ah well, sometimes the king becomes the fool to wander and experience the land firsthand. i am sure the reason everybody thinks pan foes are inactive is because they don't want to stomache the amount needed to feel them.

There are a lot of ignorant kids who come to this sight looking for advice about active species.

Sulfur tufts have been reported as responsible for several deaths in Europe. Do what ever you want to do; freedom is in your nature, however, after looking at your ratings, I question your motives when you say that sulfur tufts produced a " very weird and confusing visual experience." If some stupid kid eats those things and dies because of your highly questionable report you are responsible. I hope you get this death thing figured out before you take others with you.

To everyone else: DO NOT EAT SULFUR TUFTS! They are poisonous and may kill you.

Sorry Uki,
I love you man but I simply cannot tolerate this foolishness.

i am not responsible for anything anyone else puts into their own mouths according to their own freewill. i don't advise anyone to put any mushroom in their mouths without first doing their own research thru experience and understanding. guide books advise against eating poisonous mushrooms, yet we all do it, they tell you not to eat the hallucinegens, yet we all do it... are they responsible for our stupidity if we make an error in judgement? i think not... the reason we are mushroom hunters interested in mycology is because we like mushrooms. some people like them more than others. it's the fear of death that hinders ones experience in life. and ratings don't mean jack shit, as some wise man once said... "the truth is first ridiculed, then it is violently oppressed, eventually it is accepted." they laughed in the past when someone claimed the earth was round. peace.

I'm not going to state my opinion, all i'm going to say is you have a long way to go, or if you keep it up, not long at all.

don't we all have such a long way to go. some go down straight roads, very predictable, others take long cuts thru the wilderness, very unpredictable. any of you like sky diving, surfing, mountain climbing, antartic expeditioning?? you know those extreme sports where one mess up could spell disaster?? the art of mycology rely not only on science and technology, but also by human experience... there are risks involved, yet there also is a thrilling proccess of understanding and learning. we are ment to be at peace, at one with nature... fear and respect are to different ways of experiencing. mushrooms can kill you, yes, but they can also improve and heal as well. peace.
