some big bruise? [pics]
    #3001816 - 08/13/04 07:07 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Day 34, nothing. Day 37, one jar has deep blue splotches, coming from inside.. No external growth, one ultra-dark pip on the main patch. Fairly high moisture content. Blue is spread in a fairly even ring through the bottom 1-1/2" of the cake (was sitting upside down lately). Any preliminary guesses whether or not I just smacked the jar down too hard trying to keep the condensation from settling in one spot? (pic 3 for comparison) And as a side note, first time growing mexicana.. Is that goldish colouration a good thing?

Sorry for the image quality, as always..

Cant tell from the pics...if its mainly on uncolonized parts its most likly contams..if its ONLY on colonized parts then its most likly just brusing.. could be either though from those pics..watch if it spreads..it shouldnt. And day 34 seems like a long time. My jars were done in 2 weeks. Also I think the gold you mean is piss colored and is just myc piss and is normal though high water content can cause excess piss.

They've been 98% colonized for a week, and i don't want them to dry out but there've been a few uncolonized spots on the bottom of the jars where the BRF got pasty.. It would seem the general concensus is to not birth them lest the uncolonized portions be easy targets... And I donno how far that goes but I'd rather be waiting longer to pop them out than try cutting little holes out without hitting the good stuffs. I r3added the anchors on the images, not that they're that much bigger.

The substrate might be drying out. At this moment i don't know if it's better to birth those jars, hydrate them with a h2o2:h2o dunk and place them in the incubator. You can try slicing out the un colonized spots with a sterile knife but anyway, it's your call ...

better safe than sorry, so i negated that jar.. immediately afterwards (since i had it open) i notice that the lid holes had all become clogged with verm. from when it was upside down... so this has left me thinking, maybe the cake was completely healthy but was just suffocating with no gas exchange?

That's a wild guess but it's true that lack of air exchange at relatively advanced stages of colonization might promote contamination ...
