the stalk: white to yellow and thick not fibrous large at bottom of stalk and getting smaller towards the cap.when broken a milky white fluid comes out of it.

gills: free and very close together.white-yellow

white fluid has a srong nasty smelling odor

The milky white fluid gives it away; you've got some type of mushroom in the Lactarius genus. We'd really have to see the mushroom(if not spores) in person to identify it to a species. Some of these mushrooms are edible, some poisonous, none are active.
