If i have small cuttings (1 cm or so) i place it in a high humidity environment for 48 hours directly after cutting it off. This will ensure a nice thick callus without the tissue collapsing.
For larger cuttings this is not necessary. A little rooting powder may speed up root formation but i think the best advice is to just be patient.

When I take cuttings, I apply some rooting powder to the freshly cut base and  plant the cactus in a pot of dry sand. The sand quickly dries out the wound and there is no rot.

In a month (or two, whenever the cactus starts to get thirsty) the cutting starts to form little hornlike roots. When I see those (every month or so I carefully dig it up to inspect), I put it in regular cactus mix and begin to water.

Having your pup in a pot, even if it is filled with sand also works wonders on the patience thing
