flies living in bulk casing
    #3000014 - 08/13/04 12:07 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

my foaf recently spawned a couple of quarts of popcorn to a 90/10 mix of straw and manure. seven days later he checked on them and the mycelium seems to be healthy and has nearly colonized the entire container. the only strange thing was the presence of a few small fruit flies. are these a problem? do they pose a risk of contamination? how can they be delt with?

I think you can use neem oil or simmilar organic pestacides for that. Just spray the casing.

I used to have those fuckers in every plant in my house as well as in my frog tanks. One day I put up one of those nasty fly-papers by a window they seemed to congregate towards and before I knew it they were gone. you can also put a little oil in a jar lid in or by your grow area that will probably get rid of them. You may have to wait for their larvae to grow up to completely get rid of them. Good luck :goodluck: :chainsaw:

I just experienced that fly problem for the first time . Here is what I did. Every hour or so I open the chamber lid and fan them bastards out. After a couple days I got very fustrated and took the lid pff and set the whole thing out in the sun for about 15 min.

the next morning no flies, next day no flies, Huh.... What do you know! No more flies.

I am not saying putting myc. in the direct sun light is good but it worked. And I have no idea what kind of damage to the myc. I could have done but It seemed ok

Anyway mabey thoses flies didn't lay any eggs in the casing yet and I just chased them away.
Good luck
