Identification of mushrooms through spores only?
    #2999132 - 08/13/04 05:26 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I have found some very old mushrooms on decaying wood that could be Kuehneromyces mutabilis but I cannot be sure since all the species were very old and dried out.
Since I have taken a spore print I wonder if it is possible to identify various mushrooms only through a microscopic picture of their spores ?
And if yes, is there something like a spores picture library that makes it possible to compare the spores of found species with?

No, you can't identify mushrooms by examining spores only. On the other hand, if you suspect that you have a certain species of mushroom, examining and measuring the spores will fairly definitively confirm or refute your identification. Also, with some sets of similar mushrooms the spores are used to identify which one they are from. A good example of this is the deadly all white Amanita species, where the spores are one of the more important identification features.

The spores of Kuehneromyces mutabilis should be rusty brown in deposit, ovate, with an apical germ pore, and 6-7.5 x 4-5 microns. If yours aren't like that, then you have something else.

Happy mushrooming!

toxic: thanks for the info.
I got a link of a site with pics of mushroom spores from speeker.
It's a pity that K. mutabilis is not listed.
Where did you get the info about the shape/size of the K. mutabilis spores from?

Spore picture of K. mutabilis (not very good though..):

Several sites have spore descriptions available online...
Try Google --> search

You can get information on spores from any good mushroom book. Of course, I also definea "good mushroom book" as one that includes microscopic identification information, so that definition isn't as helpful as it sounds.

Most of the better known books have information on spores.

Happy mushrooming!

I guess I have never seen a "good" mushroom book, since none of the ones I have got has pictures or descriptions of spores.
The only thing some of them have is the color of the spore print.
Which book would you recommend a newbie like me for identification purposes ?

Speeker:
Thanks again for the links.
I actually did a search on google for Kuehneromyces+spores but could not find a link with spore pictures.
But I see that your formulation of your search is much cleverer .

The Audubon Field Guide to North American Mushrooms, by Gary Lincoff
Mushrooms Demystified, by David Arora
Mushrooms of North America, by Roger Philips
Mushrooms of Northeastern North America, by Alan Bessette, et. al.

That's just a few off the top of my head. I honestly can't find a mushroom book laying around that doesn't have that information. Which books do you have that *don't* have that stuff?

Happy mushrooming!

An excellent book with great pictures in studio lighting. I especially like that book and is the first I open when trying to ID an unknown mushroom. The only book I have that does not have information on microscopic identification features is "The ultimate mushroom book" by Peter Jordan & Steven Wheeler. A very poorly made book IMO, but it does have some fairly good photographs...

Hardly the ultimate mushroom book...

I only have kind of small field guides ( in german ) like:
- BLV Bestimmungsbuch Pilze
- GU Naturf?hrer Pilze

I think I will have to buy a better book ...
Do you think that one of the books you recommended is also suitable for european species/climate etc. ?

All of those books are intended for a North American audience.

If you read German, the best author is probably Meinhard Moser. I'm not sure how many of his books are still in print, but any of them are sure to be excellent.

Roger Philips has also done a book for Great Britain that should apply to Europe well.

Just check out your local bookseller. Flip through the book and make sure it has a complete description, including obvious things like spore size and shape.

Happy mushrooming!

Funny that you mention Meinhard Moser - he was professor on the University here were I live.
I was searching amazon for his books, but the ones that are listed are rather old and not available anymore :frown:
But it seems that he will release a new one at the end of this year:

Quote:

Kleine Kryptogamenflora 2/b/2. Basidiomyceten II. Die R?hrlinge und Bl?tterpilzw.
von Egon Horak, Meinhard Moser

I have just preordered it - hope it's worth the money ...
