Usually you just flip them if you start to notice a slowdown in growth. The foil on the sides won't hurt anything.

if anything the foil on the lid will help baecause it will prevent contaminats

In the dawn my toes are cold They spread their little trinkets on the ground In the hall By the closet door They creep into my bed without sound On a cube In a plastic egg A hundred fabric figures in a pile See them march Toward me And dance across the floor trippily Little faces keep no track of time Little faces speaking out in rhyme Little faces smiling in my mind Tiny doors For walking through sticky fingers clutch forbidden things the phone For talking through Sinking ships On a foamy sea That tumbles from the motion of filthy Little hands In the dark When eyes are wide listen to secrets that I tell In a ball On tiny beds Or beneath them where the shadow people dwell moon Beams split the night Leave bars of yellow pasted on their faces As they drift into a dream

Generally I've heard 75 to 85%, but it really depends on your conditions, so use the "when they slow down" method.

Colonizing jars need co2 guys the problem is lack of gas exchange that stalls jars given all environmental factors are close to optimum. I've had most jars fully colonize from spore to full colonizaton in under 20 days some in 15. Taping holes has stalled more jars IME than anything else

100% covered in myc, lees than two weeks starting with spores
I don't birth them right away however, I wait for them to get a good number of pins started in jar before birthing them.

I know you are thinking that takes too long. It doesn't really take any longer after the first batch gets birthed. The new ones (replacements) are always ready before the old ones in the tubs have run out. It just takes a tiny amount of planning to get them started a wee bit earlier, so they'll be ready when you need them.

Thanks for all the wonderful info, this is the first attempt ever. it took 8 days from innoculation to start of conlonization. they were looked at every day then forgot about from day 5-8 and their was about 30% colonization WAS very surprised. lol its kinda like water boiling the more you watch it the slower it takes... lol. Thanks for all the help you mushroom maniacs...

Lack of gas exchange does NOT stall jars. Co2 buildup is actually beneficial to growing mycelia, its the fruitbodies that need oxygen in large quantities. What stalls jars mostly is waterlogging, or an abundance of wa=ter in places, usually the bottom of the jars. Flippint the jars introduces air exchange which draws off some of the moisture and cures the reason for the stall, so the mycelia start growing again.

That being said, jars should not be flipped until they are fully colonised (unless stalled). Normally a jar should colonise within 12 days from innoculation time, but this is under ideal conditions with reasonably fast germinating spore. It can take up to 30 days for a jar to colonise. A jar that is past 30 days and not yet near full colonisation is likely stalled or has bacterial contams.

The reason you flip them after they're colonised is not for air exchange, its to expose the bottoms of the jars to the light.

Lack of gas exchange does stall jars Mike! gas exchange and fresh air exchange are two seperate things. you are correct myc loves lots of co2 as much as it can get (fact) And people who have partially colonized jars should not be flipping them for light  Learn the difference between gas exchange and FAE then we'll talk  :peace: GL Mike

Please explain the difference between

gas exchange

and

fresh air exchange

Because I believe that they ar two different terms for exactly the same thing.

I have so many times already :frown:

Gas exchange: The ability to release builtup gases resulting from the myc's metabolic activity (consuming substrate). A result of this inability to relaese these gas creates EXCESS myc piss which BTW is a normal process (myc piss) but an excess is not. (do not lick your cakes or leave your holes taped)

FAE (fresh air exchange) is the lowering of the co2 concentration through the introduction of fresh air plain and simple. A good fresh air exchange includes the stagnated moisture pockets of the casing surface (microclimate).

You will learn if you really pay attention meanoldman  GL

well, if you relly want to change the subject of this thread from the subject of when to flip the jars to the subject of which is the proper word to use in what situation, that would be thread-jacking and is considered quite rude...

I hate when people try to derail meaningful conversation with meaningless semantic arguments...
