Bugs In My Corn
    #2996636 - 08/12/04 05:03 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

I've seen ladybugs, grasshoppers, and strange looking flies in and on the tops already. Is this ok? I know in fields of corn are everywhere, just wanted to make sure.

lady bugs are benificial......the other two could be damaging in large numbers....but if you just see them occasionally I wouldn't worry, they're to be expected. How big is the patch of corn?

Go pull down a husk and check the corn out if you have a big patch.

Lady bugs are cool, they are predators and eat everything small and squishy (aphids and probably fly larvae).

I don't know much about flies.

Grasshoppers eat grass, corn is really high quality grass in bulk.

If the grass hoppers fly and have wings like a dragonfly, they are locusts and are alot more of a problem if they get heinous.

you should spray your crops down with something to get rid of the buggers.

It's not a large patch, it's in my garden. Just 2 rows, 15x 5 feet or something like that. And thanks for the input everybody.

as Adom said,we are from Iowa so we should know hehe, you take an ear, rip down the husk, and inspect the kernels for bugs, if none are there then don't worry about anything.

If I had an ear to rip down I would, haha. The ears gave just now begun to grow, got pubes coming out of the top of 'em but that's about it.

Oh, i'm also assuming it's field corn, because if it's sweet corn and you have no ears yet, you planted way late in the season. Field corn shoulda been sprayed for bugs early in July, either way don't spray it at this point in time.
