is a 30 gallon air pump ok if the terrarium consists of 2 x 14 gallon rubber maid containers? Its a pmp. I tried going through that thread by magash but it was taking WAY to long.

heres a quick and easy(fun) test. Magash wants to achieve a min of one complete air exchange per hour. He (and paul staments) would like 3. so do a little math and figure out your CF (cubic feet) and then get a big trash bag. with some simple math you can figure out if your pump is sufficient.

oh by the way....a 33gal bag = 4.41 cf (i know that takes out some of the fun)

good luck

The pump should be rated in CFM, so once you calc your CF, then you just divide and end up with how many minutes it takes the pump to do a full chamber (or, two chambers since that's what you're working with) worth of air. You may have to find the model number and go net hunting for the specs though if you don't have your little instruction leaflet/book that came with it.

Don't use the full 28 gallon figure, take some off for the rocks and water and all (you want the free/open air space, so more like 2/3 of the total if they were 1/3 full vertically with the rocks and everything).

The 30 gallon spec has nothing to do with the amount of air it provides in CFM, just that it pumps enough to properly aerate 30 gallons worth of water for the fishies.
