can i plant my cactus now?
    #2995992 - 08/12/04 04:25 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I just received a san pedro and a torch in the mail.
I though I was going to get a cutting but these have some roots on them.
Not alot of roots but a good amount.
Can I just stick these guys in some cactus soil right now?

Also, one measures 16 inches tall and 3 inches wide
the other is 10 inches tall 2.5 inches wide.

What size pots do you recomend I put them in?

Thanks

if it isn't hurt (exposed flesh/soft spots) you can plant it right away...
use vases like 10-12" diameter by a little more of height...
be sure to make a good drainage. and pump them up with nutes!!!
congrats...

I just found this somewhere on another site.

"Be conservative when sizing your pot; a larger pot is not necessarily better when it comes to cacti. A general rule of thumb is to choose a pot sized approximately 1? larger in diameter than the cactus it will contain."

Will a 10-12" pot be better?

now I just found this.

"if potted they should be placed in very wide clay pots. Deep but narrow pots will result in stunted growth"

Ahhhhh.......... what to do!

I think i'll just follow your advise.
thanks.

i prefer wide, shallower, clay pots.

wide pots are pretty much neccessary for stabilizing tall columnar cacti, such as trichocereus.

shallow clay pots help keep soil from being waterlogged. this is a good way to avoid root rot and stunted growth.

home made soil/compost is best...
your plant is going to love rich black castings/compost, just prepare the vase and let it dry for a couple days before planting...
just to be sure it's not any raw.
make sure it has some lime, a bit charcoal goes also well with the mix. powdered oyster shells or bone are good too for calcium...
and a nice layer of rocks in the bottom should set your cactus for at least 1 yr...

on the vase dilemma - i too prefer the bigger ones because your cactus is gonna grow tall soon, your cuttings are already big and you would need to repot it very soon if you choose the smaller vase school...

Thats a nice size cactus, I would use a large clay pot maybe one foot in diameter or so. Personally, i wouldn't use plastic as plastic pots sometimes tend to increase the propability of rot. Rot is a severe problem for me actually. About 20% of my cacti that I keep outside will get rot, out of no where, within the next year and there is nothing I can do about it. It doesn't seem to matter if I give it different environment changes, its almost like its heredic, but its really not that bad. I just cut out the soft spots and replant . wait, duh, maybe it IS genenit and its simply in their genes to rot so I keep replanting ones that are rotting, and they keep rotting the following year.. maybe it takes a few generations to outgrow it.. i dunno.

i never use clay pots because i would have to water the plants about twice as often. It's good for beginners though because it prevents overwatering.

walmart's cacti & succulents mix works well for my sp's, put a layer of pebble on top to retain moisture. Shallow, clay pot since the roots don't grow vigorously downward, more outward; so I wouldnt want all the water going down deeper than the roots.

Congrats, btw, those are some nice sized cacti
