Verm on top of cakes

I'm using PF tek brf/verm in half pint widemouth jars. I notice many pics of birthed cakes with verm resting on top of them. Is this wet or dry? Should I do this, and why does it help?

Dry vermiculate on the top of the cakes is supposed to help keep contamination out.

Yes it's moist. It gives the shrooms added moisture to draw from letting them get bigger while extending the life of the cake cause it doesn't loose moisture as fast.
Look up dunk and roll.

In the jars the verm on top is dry.
