Is it safe to freeze spore syringes and spore prints?

water expands, wouldn't they explode? I am not sure if the temp would bother them considering mushrooms grow in alaska, canada, and probably antarctica and greenland. But having your syringes detonate from the water expanding wouldnt be fun.

Hey Magash. Could you extrapulate on your "NO"? It's obvious some spores freeze in nature, so were you responding to just syringes, or is freezing spores just an unnecessary function?
thanx

You know I have read that some spores of shrooms freeze every season. No I am not steppin on anybody toes but It may be possiable
On the otherhand ....Cubies do come from warm climates and they don't make it thru the winter in the garden soooooo..... Probley not.
And on the other hand... Why would you want to freeze them anyway?
They will keep for months or years just like they are at room temps.

My dog's friend has had prints in the freezer before, and they were okay. As for the syringes, hmmmm.....*pop!*

Cubies spores do not survive any extented freeze, this is strain related guys.

Well I assumed he was talking cubes which never make it to cold climates in nature. Just look at the strain names to fig it out. Now if we're talking Ps cyans from north Oregon we may have a different story.
Now as far as syringes go (since the above was for spores) if the spore is hydrated and it freezes the water expands rupturing the spore.

Not meaning to be a stick in the mud but spore are one of the hardest substances known to man so rupturing the syringe itself would occur before the spores. I believe it the question is why would anyone want to freeze spores when they have a crisper?

As far as spores themselves certain strains cannot handle prolonged freezing or deep freezes 20-30 below. Cubies are one of them

I think what Magash is saying is- hydrated spores in a syring will rupture if you freeze them because they are semi- germinated.I agree but, Spores in water arn't exactly the same as spore dry on foil.
If spores are very dry then I believe they would survive a freeze.

Spores in water ARE NOT semi-germinated just so you are on the same page.

It is more stealthy, visitors in my house might be grabbing a beer or something, sryinges look incredibly dodgy.
I had syringes in a fridge for 2 years and they have shown no growth, about 2 months injected now, I tried 4 syringes, from a top vendor too. I wonder how they would have done frozen.
Here is a thread with Anno growing from frozen syringes. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/3729700#3729700
it was only a 1-2 days freeze though

Has anyone tried to make a glycerol stock? Lots of stuff survive when frozen in glycerol (including yeast, worms etc so why not spores)

My guess would be that it depends on how hydrated the spores are.
Completly superdry spores woul'd probably handle a freeze for quite a long time. If the spores have been at a high humidity just before when freezed, then they probably cant handle a longer freeze.
I sometimes pick freezed editable mushrooms in late atums/early winter so mycelium can hadle some minus degrees.
As someone said, spores are one of the best survivers there is,i would be very suprized if dry spores didnt survive a year in a freezer.
But this is ofcause my oppinion.
