Looks like that would be Sodium Metabisulphite. Seems to be a preservative also, used as an antibacterial. Not too positive if it is also antifungal. Hopefully someone else that knows will come along.

My sterilizing powder is Chlorine or something, and you can use that.

When dissolved in water Sodium metabisulphite (SMS) liberates SO2 and when used in sufficient quantities the SO2 inhibits the life cycle of bacteria. Yeast are able to tolerate a certain level of SO2, so arent affected if there are trace amounts left (ie in ya beer from home brew). Im not sure about other fungi, but ive seen SO2 described as a Biocide - so i spose at certain levels it is toxic to most things.

Dont use SMS in an enclosed space (the SO2 it liberates wont help you!), and if you has asthma, take a bit more care.

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer. --Dave Barry
