I used LGBR (whole) on my PF jars and got mostly lame growth. The rice packed together too much after sitting in there warm and before the mycelium took hold. I mixed it with verm also ala the usual techniques so my water content was probably too high. Alone it ought to work as long as they weren't overcooked, which makes them mushy and does not bode well for air space for mycelium to grow around into - I should have undercooked the rice since I was using verm for water content but that was long before I knew much of anything about how touchy the whole situation is. I let mine get about as colonized as it seemed they would, and then broke up a few of them and cased them and back into the incubator for a week or so to see if it recovers once there is more rice surface for them to work with. That or I'll have a big tray of contams, but it seemed worth a try. Now I've skipped ahead to corn (innoculated using bits of same mycelium I broke up for the tray casing) and it seems to be very promising. I had considered using a sterile paperclip or similar to 'agitate' the substrate via the innoculation holes (so as to not open it up, but recreate some air pockets among the substrate) but decided to try the premature casing idea first (which was also why I only did it with two of them so far). Also I'm letting the casing recover over a period of like 10 days rather than the usual 3 or 4 since I'm going on vacation for a week in a few days, and everything is going to 'chill out' in my incubator until I make it back, and since the substrate was not fully colonized because it ran out of non-solid room.

Mine are also highly rhizo'd but thats mostly visible on the Oaxacan which I understand is fond of going rhizo in the first place. But I have rhizos reaching upward through the 'dry verm' layer and all on some, looks cool! Looking for something that is not available within the substrate, I guess - water? air? something.
