Identifying this shroom
    #2991836 - 08/11/04 03:30 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Today at work, I stumbled across a mushroom. As I always do, I picked it up and snapped the stem. It turned blue immediately. So I wrapped up the cap the best I could and brought it home. It turned black, but I cut off the nasty part. All I want to know is, is it safe to eat? My friend told me once that if it turns blue its an easy way to tell, but im not sure if it can be eaten.

I think its this: http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/safe-pik/p_baeocystis7.shtml

Honestly theres not much of a wau for us to tell. Blueing is definitely a good sign though. To help everyone I.D your shroom, try giving details like spore print color(put the cap face down on a paper with a cup/bowl over it for a few hours and note the color that shows up), size/details of cap and where you found it.

Are there gills on the bottom of the cap, or is there a spongy surface?

you need to read part II of this document.

to start, what is the general area you are in?

P. baeocystis is most common in the fall rainy season and occurrs only in the pacific northwest.

A mushroom bruising blue doesn't indicate that it's active... There's a few poisonous mushrooms that will bruise blue as well.

Yeah, check out my boletes post from yesterday or the day before, hell I can't remember, those turn very blue, but they aren't actives.
If you can't show a picture maybe a good detail and description. I usually open that page with all the requirements for species ID, like size, spores, stipes, etc. And try to tell what I can!
Peace Love and Shroominess!!!
