Puscle: When you speak of sealing my pump you are referring to placing my pump in a smaller rubbermaid container and using filtered holes in the container for the air to be drawn in from in order to decrease contams... Could i simply use just a coffee filter or mouth fume filter for this container...? Also, for the tubing inside my rubbermaid should i attach a certain connection to the end or just let the hose do the work? As for sealing my 40 gallon rubbermaid container i've seen this foam sealant that is sprayable that you can pick up at any hardware store.. I believe this should work fine... And holes for the C02 i will drill above the casing layer... Any comments or tips from your experiences as well as others is appreciated...

Yes, on the pump set-up. Use silicone everywhere, every inlet, outlet and inside the rim of the lid. I`ve always used polyfill as a filterant. For my smaller, 20 gal. pump, 2, 1/2 inch holes stuffed with polyfill. I`m sure a dust mask filter will work fine, not the coffee filter. Yes, just let your airhose blow. I`ve no experience with foam sealant, never needed it. And on my 20 gallon, I`ve drilled 4, 1/4 inch holes, one in the middle of each side. No filter, no polyfil, nothing. Some may disagree and claim the holes need to be filtered, but an aquarium airpump doesn`t provide enuf pressure to blow CO2 out thru a filter. You`re doing good, you`re thinking ahead and asking the right questions.

Thanks dude.. A few more questions if you don't mind... How many times a day should fanning be done..? Oh.. that's right the air pump should provide enough air exchange... would it still help to remove lid and fan or not so to keep away from contams... You've used straw before I'd guess... It seems like the straw bulk is the way to go.. I have found a great supply for it.. I plan on using wheat straw... I think it's great that it self humidifies.. I do need to spray until pinning is initiated correct? And is there a chance that it will overhumidify itself or will this be corrected by the amount of air exchange...? And finally how often should i run my air pump... Thanks again.. Peace 4 now

We can`t assume the airpump alone eill provide enuf fresh air. Yes, use the lid 2 or three times a day to fan. Yes, give it a daily misting. Run that airpump 24/7, with that running things won`t get too humid. I see you`ve posted the same (original) questions over at drool donkey. Let`s see what others think.

You've been totally helpful.. thanks a lot.. Just to confirm a few things.. When spawn is first mixed with straw it should just sit in a sealed container... (should there be holes in the container to release c02 right now or should it just be completely closed. Secondly, I shouldn't fan it when it is first mixed.. I should just let it sit and colonize as well with the casing coloniztion.. I should then start my air pump when i want to introduce fruiting correct? Thanks a lot ... Not much help from anyone else as of yet so karma to you.. Peace

Close it up while colonizing. CO2 will encourage vegetative growth. Some air exchange is needed, very little. And keep it dark. Yes, fresh air and light will induce pinning.

When i first mix the spawn and bulk sub together should i tape up the c02 holes in my tub.. since c02 helps in mycelium development...? Also I want to hold off in adding casing until the straw is colonized correct? Do i want to compress the straw and spawn as it colonizes to make a nice brick...? I've read about using plastic wrap to literally tuck in the spawn and straw to increase c02 and humidity... Would you suggest this or should i just let it colonize in the tub alone...? Thanks.
