Is air exchange all that important for karo?

What if you filled up a pint jar half way with a karo/water solution? Would half a pint of air be enough to sustain growth? Id innoc through a tiny taped hole. Do you guys usually use 1 pint or 1/2 pint jars?

by the way .........a pint jar is way too big! 1/2 is fine

Do glass BALL canning jars with metal lids work fine?  I always see people using plastic containers in my searches.  I'll use 1/2 pint jars then.  I'd imagine it would be difficult to get the needle down into a bigger jar without turning it ever which-way to get the liquid in a suckupable position. :smile:

Do I need air exchange?  Is 1 CC of dark spore solution good for a half pint karo jar?

get a Half pint jar.......

use a Tyvek seal.....

if you want put a dab of good quality silicone........

i will now vote for Malt........

the Malt is kickin my Karos ass......

So do I need some kind of filter on top of my jars? Or is empty space in the jar enough air to sustain the growth for a couple weeks?

What kind of malt extract are you using? And what kind of silicone are you talking about? I keep reading about silicone and I feel left out that I don't use it.

There is a powder, and I think also a liquid... same stuff as is sold for homebrewing beer and such.

And the silicone is like caulking silicone or like the stuff used to seal aquariums, if you use a dab on your access hole it tends to self-seal when the needle is on the way back out, making for a safer access point to use multiple times (rather than retaping every time, etc). Or so I understand, I may be corrected at any moment.

Okay since no one feels like awnsering this guys question ill do it. No you dont need to have air exchange when your doing a karo tek. It prolly wont hurt but it is not necessary.
