How do they get M. Hostilis rootbark?
    #2987270 - 08/10/04 04:56 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

I was just wondering how they harvest rootbark. Since roots are vital to plants, I'm thinking they have to kill the plant to get the rootbark. Does anyone know how they go about harvesting this stuff? Has anyone done it themselves, or grown m. hostilis?

The root bark is harvested from roots that are from the periphery of the root span. That way the tree is stimulated to produce more lateral root buds (which is good, since big thick roots aren't as efficient as smaller roots with lots of hairs) and the tree isn't harmed either and can be harvested again in the future.

from a Brazilian vendor regarding your question: (taken from ayahuasca.com)

Quote:

Q: One of the photos is titled "harvesting without harming". How is that done? Are the trees planted and cultivated? Do you just remove a little from each?

A: The material is collected only from some of the side roots, ( only 400-500 grms of dryed material per each indivudual plant ).

Then the plant will be alowed to rest for 2 years before next extraction.

er...
i would say 500g of dried material is a LOT of wet material, but its not the point...
i believe that even if you dig up the whole tree the pieces of roots left will grow new trees again...
anyways, the plant isn't worth harvesting until it flowers/seeds so its propagation is pretty ensured...

Thanks everyone. I feel better knowing the plants aren't harmed. It'd be one thing if they were annuals like pot, since they are harvested after their life cycle anyway. But trees are a whole different ballgame.
