I have small patches, very numerous approx a centimeter or 2 in diameter rising maybe this high ---> | off the cakes . They are very thisck on some but others not. The seem to be very fine hairs protruding directly away fr0m the cake itself Very similiar to the "Wishnik" troll doll hair. VERY similar is this contam. PLease say this is normal

It could be normal ariel mycelium, I got that but its thicker and less wispy. Thats normal. Are the cakes almost done? DId this just start? Cobweb spreads quick where as myc doesnt. And also molds wont generally grow directly on myc when then start, cobweb may be different but I havnt heard that if so. So if its growing off of myc then you should be ok.
A picture speaks a thousand words though and should be much more helpful to know if its myc or not.

if the hair is tinted slightly grey its most likely some form of cobweb and if it starts forming black dots on the heads its black pinhead mold... ive never seen that before on any of my healthy cakes... keep an eye open and keep us updated...

Its definatly not black pin mold, I'm fighting that off right now and the black heads are the first thing you see..despite what you may have seen in pictures, the white fibers holding up the pinheads arent long at all..maybe a millimeter or two and you see the black part first, you know if you got that stuff. I agree with the slightly off white color though, mycelium is very white..

I also have one cake that is growing fine hairs that extend about 3 cm off the cake itself. They are completely white in color, however they look nothing like the whiteness surrounding the cake. Also there are some white hairs growing on the mushrooms (p.c. thailand)
I will submit pics as soon as I can

"Black pin mold", usually Rhizopus. . .indeed it usually has little black heads, though not always. It has a close relative, Mucor spp., that can look like what you describe. Here's a pic of Mucor I posted a short while back:

The description that the growth is 3 cm above the cake sounds like a mold. . .the most aerial mycelium I've seen doesn't get above 1 cm in height. . .
