Loosening lid during incubation

I read in the faq's a new tip that says loosening the lid of the jars and removing the tape from the holes in the lid would allow for better air exchange, I can understand that, but wouldn't it also dry the substrate out? I thought you were only suppose to do this if your substrate was on the wet side and was preventing colonization.

I do one or the other... usually loosen the lid but I wait till they are fully colonized..

If they are pf-jars then yes you should remove the tape as the dry layer of verm is your contam barrier, but there is no reason to loosen the lids on the jars the 4 you used to innoculate will provide plenty of air exchange for colonizing. I do suggest after the jars are around 60 - 80 % colonized that you turn your jars upside down so that the heavier c02 will be released much easier, allowing for the last bit of colonizing to speed along :laugh:

I'm not too worried about contams, the layer of verm I have on top of the substrate is pretty thick and the jars are in a place safe from most contams (although you can never be too sure). I also have a loose layer of aluminum foil covering the lid. But while reading the faq's I saw a thread where Anno suggested loosening the lids for proper air exchange so I decided yesterday to loosen them a bit to see what happens, never thinking about the effect it would have on the moisture content in the jars. I tightened them back up today realizing that I might be f*cking up the formula but don't know if the damage has already been done.

They won't dry out.
loose or tight, so long as the rubber rim is up, not down; and there is not foil covering the whole top, all is OK.

I've always cracked the lids a bit not for fresh air exchange but for gas exchange even with lids that have four holes but like it's been said with the holes it's not necessary. Metabolic wastes buildup as the myc consumes the substrate these gases need to be able to dissipate and not buildup which BTW can easily stall a jar. You can notice jars that have poor gas exchange they will also have more than the usual amounts of myc piss. GL

So i have 4 jars that arent goin and its been 2 week should i take the tape off or remove the tape

If no fuzz, than the lid has nothing to do with your problem.

Good point :wink: but ya take the tape off always right after PCing if not using foil. The spore may have been slightly dehydrated and may take slightly longer than you expected 14-21 days is common for germination. GL

If you have 4 jars and they look the same as they did they day you innoculated them. Air exchange is the least of your worries.

yea i know but ihave 3 growing like wild and 4 not goin at all can i trash them i want to start more and i dont have money for new jars

I ask this question to rule out assumptions. hmmm lets see 3 like wildfire and four nothing hmmm did ya shake the syringe good before innoc.? I'd dump them too.

yea i shook the shit out of them.There are 2 b+ (both have myc growing) 2 ks(niether have myc growing) and 3 ks (2 have myc growing).Iam tossin them now startin new ones tommorrow ooo yea
