Dextrose vs glucose?
    #2985409 - 08/10/04 10:05 AM (19 years, 8 months ago)

What is the diffrence between a liquid culture with dextrose or
glucose?

Is it almost the same thing, og is one of them better than the other?
If so, why?

Dextrose and glucose is exactly the same thing, just different names. The word glucose is more commonly used, at least in Swedish.

Are you absolutely sure that it is the same?

no, since it is a chiral molecule (with the same molecular formula) they have different rotations which give them different properties.

dextrose is L and glucose is D.

Different optical properties, yes. But different chemical(nourishment) properties? No.

That is not correct.

Dextrose is the D form, and while glucose could technically be any one of the enantiomers, it is always the dextrorotary form if the optical rotation is not given. The dextrorotary form is the only one found in living things, and if one would refer to the levorotary form, one would have to state that explicitly. Also, the unnatural form is very expensive and not something you could buy anywhere. Aldrich lists L-glucose at ?308.80 per 5 grams! Not something you would use as nutrition. Please, check this in any biochem book or even dictionary if you don't believe me.

""Dextrose: also known as corn sugar. Dextrose is a simple sugarvery
similar to glucose. It is commonly sold under the name dextrose, but
is actually dextrose monohydrate. The monohydrate simply means that
each glucose molecule contains one water molecule bound to it.
Therefore, more dextrose is required for priming than pure glucose
or sucrose on a weight for weight basis.""

malt is the best. bar none. (BTW potato water is dextrose, for the most part anyways)

Potato water is much more than xextrose, in fact I don't think there is much dextrose in potato water at all.

Potato water contains various sugars, proteins, potassium, iron, phospohorous, zinc, magnesium, calcium, vitamins:
Thiamin , Riboflavin ,Niacin ,B6, Folate, C

What's in JetDry?

I've found that PD usually works better than malt(ME)... Malt does work well though. Both are much better than sugarwater/honeywater/karo.

25-30 g potatoe starch, soluble
15-20 g dextrose/glucose
15 g agar, pure (omit for liquid media)
1000 mL (d)H2O

It stops clumping or something like that I think...

At the Organic Food store where i get my popcorn they only have "malt barley" or something to that affect, no Malt Extract, no malt anything. they have powdered Agar, but i don't want to do cultures like that i don't have a sterile enough environment. Should i go with the malt? So far i'm having very little luck with some honey jars i did.
