casing with verm and manure
    #2984994 - 08/10/04 09:08 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

hello guys. i am just a classical pf cake grower till now. Now i plan to make casings (i have many jars colonising) and i can find manure easily so i plan to apply as a casing top layer manure/verm. Is this combo (manure/verm) good for a casing's top layer? better than just verm?(1)

(2)Should i make a 50/50 mix? or more manure than verm?

(3)how will i sterilize the manure? just like the verm?put it in a jar and boil it?

thank you very very much:-)

>manure/verm) good for a casing's top layer
no top layer must be non nutrient

if you want to use manure u should apply it in the middle part.
you sterilize like jars.

but DON NOT FORGET TO MAKE YOUR TOP LAYER NON NUTRİENT WHİCH MEANS THERE MUST NO MANURE İN İT.
as a newbie try directly peat and verm and lime .
this would be more easy.

are you talking about the poo? if so then no, you need to pasturize the manure to leave good microbes and take out the bad mold spores and insect eggs, etc..

Hello friend

You must first pasturize the dung or straw at 170?F for 1 to 1.5 hours (do NOT exceed 170?F!!!). You then break up the cakes and mix with the dung/straw and incubate until colonized. Once it's colonized add your casing layer and incubate again until the mycelium has broken evenly through the casing layer. Transfer the casing to the fruiting chamber.

naw man, put the colonized substrate on the bottom, so that it grows up. thats what his little illustration thing is showing. however, iv always seen put a bottom layer, then a top layer. the first reply said no nutrient on top, so id say maybe just do a straight verm mix on top.

this is what i would imagine, keeping in mind i have never done a casing. i think i got a good idea of how it works though.

start with maybe a layer of poo/verm. put that on the bottom. crumble up the substrate in a sterile baggie, and layer it into the poo/verm mix. then put a layer of verm/peat on top. you can use straight verm if you cant get peat moss, though i imagine you can because peat moss is easier to get tham both verm and perlite.

if this isnt realy, someone quickly correct it.
