san pedro seedling problem
    #2984391 - 08/10/04 02:53 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I started 126 pedro seeds and got a good 40 seedlings. About a week ago i put them a bit furthe rout on my windocill then normally and they got scorched. They were red and bulbus and some split at teh top like a V. They are only 2 weeks old. I pulled them out from the ledge and put them under an incandecant light and watered. They all recovered now but they still have a 1mm V in the top. Will this V split heal up or will it delay growth badly?

Man, your cacti are doomed...just kidding
Actually that's how they are supposed to look. The tips of the notch are the cotyledons, spines will develop from inside this notch.

That thought passed my mind and i was hoping for that. I uess the growth pattern has to start somehwere because right now my pedro seedlings look just like my peyote only a bit taller, and plump now that i screwed them up.

Ok so i dont have 40 seedlings only 35 after a headcount . Una, whats teh chance of me loosing any? Is it normal to loose any past 3 weeks? when should i transplant and how should i transplant them? Shoudl i do it with a clump of soil using a spoon or back of a spoon as a shovel or wash away the soil?

That depends on how you treat them. You should not have to loose any of them

Transplant them when they are crowded, not earlier. This is usually after a few months. Repotting very small seedlings is delicate work. Transplant them with a bit of soil and try to damage them as little as possible. Water only after a few days (sparingly) and they should continue to grow.

Do you use a mister when watering your cacti seedlings Una? I water mine for usually twice a day with a mister just enough to moisten the top layer of soil. I had to transplant them 1 week after germination and lost 1 and another is shrinking and I doubt it will ever grow.

Mine lookjust like that only a bit larger and one has a tripple crown rather then a V. I only water mine once evey 2-3 days, i use a small cup with my hand to restrict the flow.

So in the end i only lost 2 seedlings, they never turned back to green like the rest. And my count is still 35 because 2 more seedlings came out a day ago. I have my seedlings and 2 Pereskiopsis plants under a 13w daylight about 8" away for now so theres no worry about burning em again. and that should be right at the 100w/meter that you reccomened ano, or is that for wintering cacti? I can always likc it up to a 20-40w cfl as the sedlinsg het larger and when the 2 plants roots take hold (i got them bare root)

Ano, what kind of soil mix is good for the Pereskiopsis plants? I used 3 parts peat 1 part composted manure. I can get coir easily, my friend has 13 bricks of mine. But should i bother to transplant from the peat or will they do ok? Im trying to get a good 10-20 rootstocks by 4 months starting with 2 3.5" rooted cuttings.
