Any advice on repoting sensitive plants?
    #2982852 - 08/09/04 05:40 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

I debated whether or not to post this question at all, because there probably isn't any advice to be given on the subject.... but anyways here it goes. Every once in awhile, I acquire a plant with a weak root structure, in a shitty, solid soil, making replanting it impossible.... The only thing I can actually think about is "Damn, if this was a plastic pot, it'd be no problem to repot" the other obvious answers I thought of are to wet it and dig around it, but both are kind of dangerous to the root structure as well..

Any advice?

try using a water-hose to wash away the old soil, just don't use to much pressure and it shouldn't damage the root structure

I would use a trowel to dig up a pot shaped chunk of earth and transplant it with as little disturbance as possible. Just plunge the trowel into the dirt however many inches from the base of the plant and when you get back around to where you started, begin to lift up and the whole section should come up. Then just set it into the hole you have ready for it.

See, thats a problem, one of my patients is a spiny cactus that's body is actually bigger than the mouth of the pot..and the spines make it WAY bigger than the mouth... might work for some of the smaller ones though.

even with cacti i use water. liek those water toothpick things. eat away at the dirt closely and repot in dry soil. if they are just crappy clay pots i just break em if they are stuck.

Yeah, if it's clay break it by hitting it on the bottom egde, do it on the grass. Wash shitty dirt from roots, transplant, and keep it out of direct sun light for a few days so it can recover without frying.

good point, shade or moviing your lights up is most important when transplanting with known shock.

I don't understand how a cactus can be bigger than the pot. Are you trying to get it out of a tight pot? That is not a problem. If you are trying to get it into a pot, pick one that is big enough.

I'm getting it out of a pot thats too small for it (ofcourse)... Its a barrel cactus. And the spines are atleast the size of toothpicks...

But because the spines are so thick and plentiful, I cant physically dig at the dirt... I might not even be able to grab it by the body to pull it out... I'm gonna try spraying some of the soil away, but I probably have to break the pot.

Break the pot or turn it upside down and hold the plant with a newspaper or rag and gently pull. If it's a plastic pot you can push on the bottom to give it a little boost. Clay pots that get stuck can be broken but they are cheap.
