Not easily... it will gum up pretty quickly... after two or three drops of liquid pass through (more than that, but not by much)...

What stefan said above. I prefer a cheese cloth myself.

does a cheesecloth seem to work better than say, an old shirt? or would it suffice?

An old shirt will work. Panty hoes also work well.
