seeking suggestions for Drying and Preserving
    #2983252 - 08/09/04 09:22 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

i currently use a fan for about 12-24 hours, then place them inside a shallow but coverable rubbermaid bin with 2 8 oz damprid jars, i have gauged the humidty inside, it gets down to about 20%, but even if i keep the mushies inside for 48 hours, they still dont get cracker dry. im having trouble and im looking for suggestions. Thank you!

You might try to maximize the surface area of your damprid. By keeping it in the jars you are only exposing the air inside to the surface of the damprid in the jars for the most part. Try dumping the damprid out into the bottom of the rubbermaid and putting the fan dried shrooms in another flat bowl and kinda nestling it down into the damprid. This should help to speed things up a little!

What kind of fan are you using?Box,Oscillating or ceiling?I always used an 18" to 20" Box Fan set on high with the fan placed about four or five feet away from the mushies. They were cracker dry with in 24 hours give or take an hour.It also could help if your AC is on too.

Just my .02 cents

Never allow the shrooms to ever touch/contact the silica gel as it is toxic as hell if ingested!

Damprid isn't silica gel, it is calcium cloride. still don't let them touch it.

wire rack works fine if the humidity is low in your area.

I use a final drying bin with 2" of damp-rid in it, a wire rack, and a snug fitting lid. nearly freeze dried
