My bud didn't use anything over the holes last time and had colonization for the first time. He just put 'em in the closet in a tubby with the HEPA 24/7. But, while more porous than filter discs, it still should be a decent barrier in clean environs.

Only problem is that they allow too much exchange and the jars can dry out . I'd cover them with foil that has a 1/2" hole in the center. This will allow for plenty of gas exchange but help prevent dehydration.

You're right about the potential for drying out. My bud mists the top with H2O2 and puts them together in a sealed tubby. With all of them in there, it's plenty moist so that dryin' is not a prob... so far.
