It would see you are in fact in over your head.
Why didn't you just go for a jar method like most beginners?
Lack of syringe?
Well, if you method is colonising and you don't get contams, your a lucky fella. Just don't open the thing any more than you have to in the future

We can be sure there is no truth in lies, but how can you be sure there is no lies in the truth?
Just because your paranoid, don't mean they're not after you.......

There is a reason in using either jars or polypropylene bags in mushroom cultivation - think about that.

I knew I'd get somebody saying something like that, but who cares...I didn't use jars, so what?

The fact is that you used, Brown rice flour, mixed with peat moss. Looks like your goning to have a contaminated mess. Peat does not hold water like verm, it becomes soggy.

Sounds like you are winging it and will probably fail.
However, it also sounds like the spores germinated so just keep your fingers crossed.
Try not to open it too often, the air is not as contaminated as some people think but you are still taking your chances.

Listen to MAX. Pretty ballzy attempt for your first time! Good for you!!! You will probably figure out that growing is NOT rocket science ALOT faster than the "BY THE BOOKERS"
It sounds like you are getting colonization and not contams--To me. Keep the lid on and don't mess with it. You may still be O.K.
Good Luck!!

Thanks Dioze and Max. You are both wise in the ways of the shroom. I was kinda thinking that the air is not as HUGE of a danger as people make it out to be, for one reason: allergy reports. Do you guys get those on the news there? They list mold spores and pollen counts and stuff like that for people who have seasonal allergies. They're measured in PPM (parts per million) and they're usually lower numbers. So that's what I gotta say about that.

Here's what I figured as to why I did this instead of doing what i read in MMGG and in shroom wizard's (both I have printed out): I just thought 'Whether this works or not I'll have higher quality experience than anybody who uses jars (or bags).' Well...that's more than my 2 cents, so I better let this rest a little bit.

I got 10$ says OTTO is wrong!!! Just don't mess with them until they are ready to case.
AIR "can" be bad, but a little here and there USUALLY don't hurt a thing. Mushrooms CAN be grown with-out ALL the stress and worry of contams. In MOST cases "common-sense" sterility is ALL that is necessary.
When they grow in the wild, do you think a little fairy sterilizes jars and plants them on "perfectly" sterile medium?
I think NOT!!!
Otto, you wanna bet 10$? I bet that everything is cool atleast until this person goes to fruit!!

I'm thinking it's going to work if I just don't check it until I absolutely have to. I can see the light/dark contrasts between the mycelium and the brf/peat moss, so if I wait until I can't see anymore dark colors and give it a day or two after that I should be ok right? I do plan to case it, but with this much stuff I have no idea what to put it in...maybe if I just leave it in it's originial container. Oh well...we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

Thanks, Dioze. I've got $10 that says I learn something out of this, and that's what matters more than whether I succeed or not.
