Pinning / Fruiting
    #2978629 - 08/08/04 03:12 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

If SWIM put cakes into fruiting chamber a week ago, but realized his temp today was up in the low 80's. So SWIM checked the high low temps on the themometer the low was 71 and the high was 86. Is this going to cause a big problem in his pinning/fruiting? SWIM has been fanning once a day. Is this ok? Advice appreciated.

you need to fan at least 3 times a day

it will slow it down, but that should be the worst of it. they wont die or anything. and yes, fan more. if your friend doesnt they either wont pin at all or the pins will be stunted.

I disagree. Fanning is way overrated. It's a good way to introduce contams.

The volume of the substrate compared to the volume of the container is small. Fanning once a day, or even less, is plenty.

Yes, I realize stagnant air is a contam risk, and yes I realize that the fruits will be stunted if the CO2 rises too high. However, unless you are using a very small fruiting chamber, it's not a problem to fan only once a day or less.

you dont need to fan that much with cubensis - infact its pretty hard to fuck cubensis up although im sure many people manage it - over fanning results in lower humidity.
Fanning is more important for fickle mushroosm like pans.

People i have a little funny question, and i didn't want to make a new topic because of it so i'm just going to ask here ...

What can i do to slow down pin ( shroom ) growth ? Should i let them without air exchange and less light in the fruiting chamber ?

You ask yourself, why should i do something like that, well the answer is simple, im not going to be home for the next 7 days and my cakes have allready pins forming so i have to slow growth a bit ...

Im worried becose i can lose some of the spores and i need to make spore prints, and also i heard that i can mess up later flushes if i let them to fruit too long ...

What do you think ?

> my cakes have allready pins forming[...]

You are already too late then. If they hadn't pinned you could bump the temp up to 90-95 and they would go dormant.

You could cool down your chamber, that would slow the growth and also degredation of the fruit bodies.

I wouldn't worry about letting them grow too long though. They'll just get extra large, have lots of black spores all over them, and be less potent by the gram. They'll still be fine to eat.

Maybe 7 days is a bit long though.

Here's what I would do... Pick off all the pins and bump up the temperature to 90+ untill you are ready to leave, then when you leave cool it down to around 60 or less.

P.S. YMMV, post the results.

i dissagree

heat will cause degredation and cold will slow things down

thats why you store spores, isolations of strains in colder temps, so they don't keep growing and so the spores will stay viable.
plus heat that high will dry the myc. out fast. IMO

I would also like to save some spores to get prints, but i think most of the spores will fall of :frown:

What do you think about leting the cakes stay in dark with no air exchange for theese days when im not home ( i would also lower the temperature max as i can, and humidity will stay high too ... ) What do you think about that ?

ps. remember, this is my first growth and you know how hard it is for me to let them home alone for 7 days  :undecided:

Neither dark nor lack of air exchange would do much at this point IMHO.

Here is a pic of my "gang" ... The pic was taken today in the morning ( its 7 pm now ) .
The pins are still relatively small, as i heard, they need 5-7 days to completely grow. If i start counting from today then the 7th day will be the day when i'm returning home ...

Does anyone have experience with leting the cakes in the fridge a whole week ? Experts, what do you think ? Can it harm the mycelium and the pins ?

It can definitely stall those pins. But it won't bother the myc one bit.
