Another newbie question - fridge incubator
    #2980719 - 08/09/04 09:27 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I have a walk in closet that I'm gonna make clean and put a heater in for my cakes/spawn but I thought this was a good idea too:

http://www.arbreptiles.com/cages/incubator.shtml

Its a HOW TO for converting a fridge into a reptile egg incubator.
The part about gassing CFC's to the atmosphere made me feel ill, but the rest is good. I imagine you could get old fridges that have had the CFC's already removed properly. I used to think CFC's just sort of floated up and reacted with some ozone and then went away, but then I took some chemistry class and we learned that CFC's actually act like a catalyst for destroying ozone and a little bit of CFC can destroy mind boggling amounts. I'm sure everyone new that already. Hip Hip horray dupont!!

Oh, someone kill me if this idea has surfaced before, I searched but did not find.

It actually says to just spill the CFC's into the air?

That's fucking horrible!

You might as well slice your arm with a knife and put a blob of melotonin over it.

Newer fridges have R134A which won't harm the ozone, but the old ones with R12 have the CFC's. I'm not absoulety sure but I think they made everyone start using R134A five or six years ago.

The change has happened but still alot of old refeg's out there.

Many fridges can simple be shutoff with the temp setting and do not have to be purged/evaced. depending on external air temps generally household temp will allow the heating by simple screwing in a plugin receptical where the lightbulb was and disconnecting the door activator button. Then one can use a number of accurately controlled heating devices from a heating mat to a aquarium heater sealed in a large jar (the larger the better) the fridge will heat up very nicely once sealed. I've seen a few very nice floor freezer converts over the years also, this is an old idea BTW. I burn our paper garbage to save on our garbage bill and I always make sure theres no plastic of any sort because of the CFC issue. The World it's a terrible thing to waste! :frown: I hear ya there!!!
