possibly burned jars?
    #2980167 - 08/09/04 03:12 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

i underestimated the power of my heating pad and got my jars pretty warm. they were growing at rapid speed too! they were all 50% colonized in less than 3 days... but i am afraid "i killed em' gilbert! i killed em'" any tips or signs to look for?

i do not do anything illegal. (other than j-walking) everything i say i am doing or have done is a lie.

If anything you might have caused alot of the water content in the jars to evaporate alot quicker than usual, which might stunt the growth, if they grew like mad for 3 days and now seem to have stopped (but also aren't done colonizing fully). Also fast growth may have depleted your oxygen content and replaced it with carbon dioxide which would also stunt growth. You can fix both problems by using a sterile empty syringe to suck up a few mL of hydrogen peroxide (3% is fine) and inject it evenly into the jars as if you were innoculating. Just pass the needle deep enough to pass the dry top layer of verm and spew the peroxide in there. It will bubble pretty heavily, and those bubbles are raw oxygen, and the only other by-product is pure water (and 3% is already 97% distilled water by volume). So this will help out both issues, and as a third side effect it can zap any alien spores that may be thinking about sprouting (contams). It also kills mushroom spores, but not once they have taken hold and created mycelium (and your cakes at 50% have well taken hold) - so you can't add peroxide to your jars unless they already have mycelium going or you are innoculating with mycelium liquid (such as from karo/honey tek).
