Seeking tips and advice
    #2980021 - 08/09/04 02:33 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

A little background info. I've been smoking since I was around 12 or 13 and I'm 19 going on 20. I managed to quit smoking cigarettes once this last december for two months. I was arrested and when I was released etc... I visited my friend in Maryland. She actually played a major role in my quitting for those two months whether she knows it or not. Anyway, I went to a strip club and was totally wasted. Someone sparked up a cig and offered me one and that night I just smoked. I smoked my ass off. Then I swore to myself that was it, just that night. I was good for another week or so and then I started having the occasional cigar. Now it's august and I'm addicted as shit again, if not more so than before. I would really like to quit and never go back. I just don't have the motivation I did before to quit. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for keeping ones mind off smoking, alternate activities, or substances that help reduce the cravings. Keep in mind I don't have any money to spend on shit, (another reason I should quit). I've been without cigarettes around 5 hours as of now, and I'm already becoming an irritable mess. I remember from when I quit last time, the first week or so is the hardest with the irritability and whatnot, and then it's just fighting the cravings. I could really use all the advice I can get. Thanks guys.

Also, I'm in rehab. So I can't use anything illegal in aiding me this time.

well if you went that long a couple of times then you should just buy some pstches and when you crave just put one on. I can't even quit for more than 4 hours... Consider yourself lucky that you can quit for months...

Tobacco is very hard to quit.

Your going to have to quit by pure will power alone.

Will power is the only thing that will get you through. I'm smoke free for almost two years. I stll get a craving from time to time. you need to stay away from triggers for about 6 months. Drinking and smoking go together, I would crave when I drank coffee. I had to give that up for a while. You can make it just keep trying. Your health depends on it. I just watched my Mother die this past June because of her smoking. It' not good to see someone struggling just to breathe. hang in there you'll make it.

Atleast you don't still smoke even if half your family has died from cigarettes.

I probably would. Anyway, I just woke up around 2:00. I had to have a few drags off a cig, but I'm going to try to go all day, if not atleast the majority of the day without one.

Go to a doctor.  Tell them you suffer from depression and want to go back on wellbutrien.  Tell them it worked in the past and you would like to go back on it.  This way insurance will cover it.

Wellbutrien is the same thing as Zyban, the drug used to quit smoking.  It effectivly kills your desire and satisfactin from smoking.  I used it sucessfully for about 2 months, then tapered off.

Of course, about 7 months later I lost my job and a whole slew of really nasty shut happened, and I took up smoking again.

But that was my own fault.

wellbutrien 150mg SR, once or twice a day as prescribed + some willpower will get you off the shit.

I kind of self medicated myself with wellbutrin from a friend before. I don't like the mood swings at all.
