Glad to hear you?re going to give the PMP a try. I don?t think you?ll regret your decision. Pretty sure that monster ass thread is the unofficial PMP-tek.
As for the lighting, I?ve used both natural, fluorescent, and plain white light sources successfully. If blue LED?s are your thing, no reason they shouldn?t work too. I?ve wanted to use a black light for sometime in my grow room. Not that I thought it would help the growing, just thought it would set the right mood from the get-go.
Cakes versus casings will definitely elicit some passionate opinions around here. You could do either successfully with the wealth of support provided by the Shroomery! I started with cakes using the original PF-Tek, but that was back in ?96 before I found this place -- I recently found my very first box from the professor with his tek inside. It made me cry. Only regret is not taking a print from that first grow, but I didn?t know any better.
I agree with buying quality equipment too. The pump you?ve chosen sounds big ? can you easily vary its output for a single pod? I?m using a Hagen (Optima 807 model) variable speed pump that puts out a max 5000 cc/min at 4 psi (coincidentally your original estimate). Think that websites cfm numbers are an order of magnitude off?? Anyway, I have had it hooked to two 40 gallon PMP?s at the same time without any problems.

Pretty sure 0.75 CFM isn't a magnitude off, these sites all give the 9730 a rating right in the same ballpark:
http://www.aquatics-warehouse.co.uk/acatalog/A000_ACO_POND_AIR_166.html http://www.dragonflylanding.ca/Air_Pumps.htm http://jl-company.com/AquaticEco/AirComressors.html
unfortunately, the only company that sells it for 65$ is out of stock until late September..... I'll have to get by with a cheapy until then which is fine since I'm starting with a single pod. As for regulation....... With aquarium pumps you can bleed off the excess with some sort of aquarium valve fixture no?.... leaving you with the problem of not really knowing how much flow is going into the pod, LOL, never ending tradeoffs and depressing facts of a many dimensional design space.

Sorry for the confusion...was talking about the Hagen pump's info. Their info doesn't match up with what's printed on my pump.
Good to see you recognize the complexity. Not really depressing to me though, its the miracle of life.

ok so I found grotek hydrocorn in my city. Its a brand of LECA, $35.00 CAD for a 50L bag. They sell two different size of pebbles. 2-4 mm and 16-24 mm .... so, having no experience with this stuff, do I want small or big?

Just went to a hydro store and picked up some Hydroton, made in Germany size ~= 16 mm!! spiffy ...... there was this other shit there that claimed to be expanded clay but it was like 4 times as dense and it cost about 2/3 the price. The guy said he's been sitting on it for a couple years and nobody ever buys it. Any idea what that was or if it would work the same? I've never been in a hydro store before, tomato growing must be lucrative because that equipment is sure expensive..... off to w**mart for some tubing and bubblers.

OK, I bought the biggest tub I could find at w@lm@rt. Its 46 Gal: 35.5"L x 21"W x20"H . I used up about 80% of my hydroton just getting it up to the 4" mark. I wish I'd worn a dust mask, my lungs feel kind of fucked. Oh well, gotta keep the oncologists busy right?
I put two 23" inch bubblers in there..... just watching the humidity climb, 60,61,62,63..... % nice.......... now, I just have to finish my flow hood so I can get some spawn cooking. Then I'm set.... I live in backwards world, don't worry.
My only concern is the standing water at the bottom of the pod. Why don't contams grow and float up and fuck with you?
thanks for the help, this is wicked

Did you wash them before you put it in the tub? A little water rinse will get rid of most of that clay dust. I did an initial cleaning with a bleach solution just to be extra safe. You should put some hydrogen peroxide in the water to slow down its stagnation. I put around 10% by volume, probably overkill but the stuff's cheap. Make sure to clean the pebbles/pod between growing cycles too.

I washed it. While pooring straight from the bag, a lot of dust kicked up and I got a lung full. For sure gonna put in peroxide when I'm actually growing. Humidity is up to 98% and seems to be happy there

I dont understand the comment about perlite smelling bad either..if its smelling bad then youve got contamination problems. I personally put a little h202 in the perlite and it stays completely odorless, and keeps humidity in my smaller chambers very high!

Hmmm, I just went and read where I thought I had previously read that perlite stinks and you're all totally right and newbie is wrong. I made it up in my head. Let's take a look at the score:

Damnit, I'm trailing by 1. Atleast I'm no longer spreading misinformation (I probably am, just not about the smell of perlite).
Thank you

I knew I had seen it some place:
"By the time your cakes have stopped producing mushrooms, the perlite might start getting a little bit skunky smelling"
found in this tek:
