Doing good on my casings so far. Coco coir (reptile bed found in pet shops) broken of in a chunk with warm water added, threw in some calcium carbonate (is suggested but pH should be fine using coco coir instead of peat) then added verm. about 38% coco coir, 60% verm, and 2% calcium carbonate. I hear coco coir works by itself as a casing layer as well...many swear by it but I have no experience with this.

you dont use it instead of BRF or Grain, you use it with BRF or Grain.

Its all ive ever cased with, so i cant really compare, but i am happy with the results

You use BRF or Grain then once that stuff turns white you throw that in a container and spread this coco coir (plus verm or whatever if you want) on top. This serves kinda as the dirt that your shrooms will grow in and holds things together and gives moisture.

Check the beginners FAQs under casings then the Cultivation FAQs under casings and you should get some good info.

What about gypsum? I know the "Ott brothers" and others put gypsum in their peat moss casings. Does Coco not need the pH buffering? And is that what the calcium carbonate does (pH)? Thanks!

you don't need to ph adjust coir....its fine as is....add as much verm as you want ppl use all kinds of diff ratios...I personally use 75/25 coir/verm

I agree - dont mess around - just mix the coir with a thick grade verm and your laughing - best casing layer around - piss easy and it rarely contams
