Tyvek ???? for the chemists......
    #2976711 - 08/07/04 11:48 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

So I did a little research.........

Dupont rates Tyvek @ 5 microns.......

Best I can figure (from a lotta searchin) H2O is about 2.96 microns

Come school me........Is Tyvek just water resistant?

oh , by the way........what is O2.......in microns

peace..........

it's not just a shroom growin site......its chem 101

You got it!
Tyvek is water resistant to the point that it won't allow water to pass through like a coffee filter ,but water vapor will still go through. The fact that it doesn't absorb water like a coffee filter is another obvious advantage since a wet coffee filter is a perfect place for stuff like cobweb to find its way through to your substrate.
Not sure about the micron size of an o2 molecule, but since it is a gas it is very ,very small and will pass through the tyvek just as easy as it would if the tyvek wasn't even there.

Well thanx Mykey.......I am still looking for a chemist's point of view.......

I used to date a forensic scientist(by the way she never let me do any expert witness work).......but that bridge has burned like a hairsprayed afro at bic lighter convention.......

So......what are the molecular measurements of O2 and CO2.........

I know this in NOT dirrectly cultivation related.......but I have found this site to offer more than just how to grow fungi.....

>what are the molecular measurements of O2 and CO2

They are much much much smaller than 1 micrometer.

An ebola virus is 0.2 micrometer big, a rhinovirus is 0.02 micrometer big.

The size of atoms is in the range of 1 ?ngstrom, which is 10E-10 m, which is 0.0000001 micrometer.

Hopefully none of our grain substrates will grow ebola

I think it would need to be fortified though ;p

(i'm going off pothead memory here cause i didn't save the link)

i read recently that of the two more commonly used tyvek envelopes (the big express mail and the big priority mail) that the express mail envelopes are made of 25% recycled paper. If used as a filter on regular jars, will this encourage contams to slip through? If i have a bunch of Express mail envelopes and a bunch of priority ones should i only use the priority and return the express mail?

I use only the "Global Priority"

mines are 100% DuPont.......

but watch out for the feds.......misusing an envelope may be a federal offense......

Where do you get these Global Priority ones, and something can't be 100% dupont can it, dupont is the company that makes it. i'm talking about the material its made out of. Are the Global priority ones someone how fed-related? How is it Less (potentially) a federal offense using a Different envelope from the same source?

Also, on the tyvek envelopes is it safe to use the portions with Red / blue ink on it? I have up till now been cutting out around the ink, preferring not to risk it Burning / melting onto my substrate, but recently i've been using entire envelopes cause i'm lazy and i simply turn the ink face down so i only see white when the jar is all prepped. Anyone?

Well, it can be 100% Tyvek which is what he meant.

The feds remark was more of a joke (though, technically serious)... about as serious as the whole mattress tag thing - if they wanted they could tack on some extra charges for misusing postal supplies (which are only provided to you free so that you can use them to send mail, and that is the only approved usage). But seriously I don't think anyone has ever gotten 'busted' for using them for other things.

Ink matters not, use every square inch of the envelopes that you can.

Interesting yeah i was wondering why he made a point of noting that i would have thought it went without saying.

Well i have a bunch of priority and a bunch of express mail envelopes i'm just gonna use them equally since i don't see any writing on them anywhere that specifies if its 100% or What % Tyvek.

Hell......my whole house is wrapped up in Tyvek.......

But if you can read in english........some envelopes are 100% Tyvek.......(or as close as I care) and some have 25% recycled paper.........personally I think it was for the Hippies........as I am one........

I was just curious about the gas exchange .......

Long live the USPS.......

I think the 25% ones are bad. Tyvek doesnt hold water, paper does. If 25% of it holds water better thats a 25% better chance that a contam will slip through. The envelopes are free and they deliver them, I'd just order more of the 100% ones (the Express')

There are a few different types of Tyvek. Check out DuPont's product manual, http://www.tyvek.com/pdf/prod_techman.pdf
From the type descriptions it sounds like the FedEx/USPS envelopes are Type 14. Not sure if they are coated though. Guess some enterprising soul can do some hydrostatic testing to find out.

As for recycled paper content in Tyvek envelopes, there is none. There is indeed 25% recycled content in some Tyvek but its recycled plastic. Here is an interesting article about how that came about.

Okay so i just read over the express mail and priority mail envelopes and i do NOT see anywhere 25% recycled or 100% tyvek or any mention of recycling or content. So... which one do i want, the one which is mostly blue (express) or the one with more Red / less blue in it (priority).

I read English.

KillBill:

Both express mail and priority mail have Tyvek envelopes. Don't worry about whether there is recycled content in it. Check the link to the USPS below and you'll see the different envelopes as well as their item numbers. You can have them delivered to your door in 10-14 days free of charge if you create an account and order them.

If you already have some of the envelopes, look for the item numbers that I listed below or the recycling designation (triangle with number 2 in it with the letters HDPE underneath).

is there much of a difference between priority and xpress envelopes?

i put sum express ones on my jars earlier today, and now am worried of contams.

i ordered sum priority just in case....
