shortly after i posted to this thread last night and in thinking about OTD and what function it could possibly serve, i read the following passage:

Keeney again reminded us how interesting it was that the Bushmen and so many other indigenous healers he had studied, actually do the exact opposite of what we do to help people in our culture. Psychologists, social workers, doctors, and other health professionals routinely do things to calm and tranquilize people when they are agitated or upset about something. We prescribe Xanax and thorazine and Prozac. People attempt to medicate and calm themselves down with alcohol and other drugs when they feel upset. We teach people to do meditation and relaxation training. Psychotherapy is all about helping people to de-excalate their conflicts, see things in a more serene light, calm down, relax, tranquilo.

Yet in ancient cultures, the shamans often advocate something quite different: They instruct people who are troubled and disturbed to rev up their energy even further. People are invited to dance away their troubles, to share them with the community, not through talk, but through movement. People become so aroused, they literally begin shaking and convulsing, sometimes needing to be visibly restrained by others, cooled down, before they jerk up again as if pulled by the strings of a puppetmaster.

In order to communicate in a meaningful way with others, the Bushmen believe you must be maximally aroused -- your emotions at their height, your spiritual energy ratcheted up to the highest possible level, and your body fully alive.

?You cannot send thoughts to others,? a Bushman shaman explained, ?without first  being filled with feeling. The arrows in your belly must be hot and your heart fully awakened.? Then, and only then, can the deepest messages be expressed between people and become completely realized.

i am not sure if the ancient technique and its effects described here are relevant to something like Jane Goodall and The Chimps -- World Tour 2005!
